Job summary

A Canadian university athletic department is seeking a Laboratory Assistant in Guelph, responsible for preparing soil, plant, and feed samples for analysis. Candidates should have a two-year Laboratory Technician program and a year of lab experience. Strong time management and teamwork skills are essential. This is a full-time role working 35 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday or Monday to Friday.

Laboratory Assistant - Soil and Nutrients

Location: Guelph, CA, N1G 2W1

The Soil & Nutrient Section of the Agriculture and Food Laboratory is seeking a qualified individual to play a key role in supporting Laboratory Services Division’s values: Client Centered, Integrity, Individuals Matter, Shared Responsibility, and Committed to Evolving.

General Purpose

The incumbent will provide supporting role involving the preparation of soil, plant and feed samples for analysis and determination of soil physical properties.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include: weighing, drying, grinding, sieving and, extraction of soil, plant and feed samples; creating electronic worksheets; tracking inventory; sample disposal; maintaining general laboratory cleanliness; and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Two-year Community College in a Laboratory Technician program, combined with one year of relevant laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated working experience in a high volume, fast paced, time-sensitive environment;
  • Experience in sample preparation of soil, plant and feed samples;
  • Good understanding of laboratory health & safety practices and WHMIS;
  • Excellent time management, organizational and multi-tasking skills;
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment;
  • Proven experience with visual observation and attention to quality and detail;
  • Ability to work under pressure and adhering to strict deadlines.

Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday and/or Monday to Friday.
