Job summary

Scarborough Health Network is seeking a part-time Laboratory Assistant for the Shared Hospital Laboratory. You will work in the specimen receiving area, plating specimens to media and handling results requests while assisting the senior technologist and operations manager with routine microbiology duties.

Ideal candidates hold a Michener Institute or equivalent Laboratory Assistant certificate, with up to 6 months of bacteriology experience and familiarity with media, incubation times, MALDI,

Qualifications

• Michener Institute Certificate, or equivalent as a Laboratory Assistant, or Career Canada Certificate, or OSMT.
• Preferred 6 months of experience in bacteriology with knowledge of media and different incubation times for setup in a fully automated microbiology lab.
• Preferred knowledge of setting up Maldi, Kirby Bauer and AST using Bruker and Phoenix instruments.
• Demonstrated problem recognition and problem solving skills.
• Good organizational skills with ability to prioritize work
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
• Adheres to Code of Conduct and Health & Safety policies; fosters a positive environment
• Utilizes protective equipment and reports hazards
• Supports diversity and ethical conduct in patient/staff interactions

Job Description

Position Overview: Reporting to the Operations Manager of Microbiology Department in Shared Hospital Laboratory, you will be responsible for performing duties in the specimen receiving area. This will include planting all specimens to appropriate media and answering results request. As well, you will assist the Senior Technologist and Operations Manager with general duties in the Microbiology department.

Requirements

• Michener Institute Certificate, or equivalent as a Laboratory Assistant, or Career Canada Certificate, or OSMT.
• Preferred 6 months of experience in bacteriology with knowledge of media and different incubation times for set up in fully automated microbiology lab.
• Preferred knowledge of setting up Maldi, Kirby Bauer and AST using instruments like Bruker and Phoenix.
• Demonstrated problem recognition and problem solving-skills.
• Demonstrated good organizational skills, ability to organize work and set priorities
• Ability work independently or as a team member in a fast- paced environment
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written
