Job summary

A leading health network in Ontario is seeking a part-time Laboratory Assistant for their Shared Hospital Laboratory. The ideal candidate will support microbiology duties, including specimen handling and assist senior staff with technical tasks. Job Description

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Operations Manager of the Microbiology Department in Shared Hospital Laboratory, you will perform duties in the specimen receiving area, including planting specimens on appropriate media and responding to result requests. You will also assist the Senior Technologist and Operations Manager with general duties in the Microbiology department.

Requirements
  • Michener Institute Certificate, or equivalent as a Laboratory Assistant, or Career Canada Certificate, or OSMT.
  • Preferred 6 months of experience in bacteriology with knowledge of media and incubation times for setup in a fully automated microbiology lab.
  • Preferred knowledge of setting up Maldi, Kirby Bauer, and AST using instruments like Bruker and Phoenix.
  • Demonstrated problem recognition and problem-solving skills.
  • Good organizational skills, ability to organize work and set priorities.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrates values consistent with hospital Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policies and legislation.
  • Utilizes protective equipment provided and reports hazards.
  • Engages in ethical conduct and appreciates diversity within the patient/staff population and community.
  • Excellent work performance and attendance.
