Job summary

Dynacare is seeking a Laboratory Assistant - LHSC (Float) to support Kelowna LHSCs, West Kelowna and Winfield. The role involves processing blood samples, data entry for requisitions, and providing patient-centered service in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

This full-time, onsite position requires phlebotomy skills, CSMLS/BCSLS or MLA/MLT credentials, and the ability to work across multiple sites with empathy and professionalism. Competitive pay and benefits are offered.

Qualifications

• CSMLS or BCSLS certified or MLA/MLT program accredited
• Bachelor degree in related scientific discipline or nursing, or international MLA or MLT qualification, AND a minimum of 1 year patient-facing phlebotomy experience may also be considered
• Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, to communicate instructions clearly to patients

Responsibilities

• Create an ideal customer experience that is best in class and engages with patients around our products and services
• Accurately enter data, patient, and test information for Ministry of Health requisitions
• Obtain quality blood samples and other specimens from patients using venipuncture techniques
• Sort and steer specimens and perform ECGs
• Ensure specimens and supporting documentation are completed per SOPs and ready for data entry and transportation to the laboratory
• Maintain confidential information securely and contribute to quality metrics and regulatory compliance

As a Laboratory Assistant - LHSC (Float), you are responsible for processing blood samples and other laboratory specimens, entering requisitions and results accurately – all in a timely manner. You also play an important role in providing customer service to create the best possible patient experience. These can be stressful situations for patients, and you need to display empathy, care, and kindness. Testing results are often critical for patients, and you are there to help and make an impact on their lives.

Status: Full time (37.5 hours/week)

Hours of Work: Various, Mon - Fri, between 6.45am - 8.15pm

Location: Coverage at Kelowna LHSCs, West Kelowna, Winfield

How YOU will make a difference:

• Create an ideal customer experience that is best in class and engages with individuals around our products and services
• Accurately enter data, patient, and test information for Ministry of Health requisitions
• Obtain quality blood samples and other specimens from patients, using skillful venipuncture techniques, performed in keeping with Dynacare’s mission and values
• Sort and steer specimens and perform ECG’s
• Ensure specimens and supporting documentation are completed as required in SOPs and ready for data entry and transportation to the laboratory, following established protocols for the handling of suitable and unsuitable samples
• Ensure all confidential information maintained in a secure fashion. Contribute to meeting the departmental/corporate quality metrics, regulatory compliance and quality indicators

What YOU bring to the role:

• You are CSMLS or BCSLS certified and/or a graduate of an MLA program accredited by BCSLS or equivalent awarding body (Canadian Equivalent)
  • Applicants with a Bachelor degree in a related scientific discipline or nursing, or international MLA or MLT qualification, AND a minimum of 1 year patient-facing phlebotomy experience may also be considered
• You are customer-focused with a genuine care for patient’s health
• Demonstrate skill in phlebotomy, with the ability to manage anxious patients through the sample obtaining process in a pleasant, calming and reassuring manner
• Prioritize and self-manage within a deadline-oriented environment
• Be extremely detail oriented
• Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, at a level that enables you to communicate instructions, clearly and understandably, to patients
• Ability to attend shifts at various LHSCs across region

• May sit or stand for prolonged period of time with extensive computer use
• Required to lift a maximum of 30 pounds as required
• Exposed to bio-hazardous substances, temperature differences and noise variances
• At times might require frequent standing, sitting, bending, etc.

Pay rate: $27.00 - $30.75 per hour

The hiring pay range has been established; however, the final pay offer will be determined by taking into consideration various factors including but not limited to, level of experience and education requirements.
