Job description
Overview

Your Opportunity: The Team Leader is a key member of the Laboratory Services team, responsible for coordinating and supervising the pre-analytical operations across Alberta Hospital, Fort Saskatchewan Hospital, Strathcona Hospital, and Redwater Health Centre. This role ensures the timely and efficient delivery of services at each site, including specimen collection, data entry, specimen processing, urinalysis, ECGs, and report generation. Reporting directly to the Clinical Supervisor, the successful candidate must demonstrate strong collaboration skills, working effectively with patients, laboratory staff, supervisors, and various hospital stakeholders. The Team Leader actively contributes to Quality Improvement and Process Improvement initiatives and may perform Laboratory Assistant I duties during staffing shortages. This position\'s home site may be negotiable, and the successful applicant will be expected to be onsite at each location at regular intervals.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Staff scheduling and coordination
  • Conducting audits and inspections
  • Managing payroll tasks
  • Overseeing inventory and supply ordering for the pre-analytical area
  • Ensuring staff competency and organizing training for staff and students
  • Participating in SOP development
  • Attending Joint Workplace Health and Safety Committee (JWHSC) and other safety-related meetings
Role Description

As a Laboratory Assistant II, you will perform advanced preanalytical or analytical techniques on specimen/samples or coordinate, prioritize, monitor, and assign duties of laboratory staff in your assigned area. You will resolve escalated issues, conduct quality control investigations and maintain technical and operational procedures. You will be responsible for ensuring laboratory staff maintain compliance with policies and procedures and will provide coaching and feedback to staff and students.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program.

Additional Required Qualifications: A minimum of three years\' experience working as a Medical Laboratory Assistant while demonstrating competency and reliability in the activities/processes within the area of responsibility is required. Experience in the last 5 years performing urinalysis testing, ECGs and all blood collection procedures on all patient ages including newborns. Connect Care Beaker LIS experience within the last 5 years.

Preferred Qualifications: Advanced computer skills including proficiency with Epic Beaker LIS, Rovers and iECG. Previous supervisory experience is preferred. Experience with scheduling is an asset. Experience providing coaching and constructive feedback while working with a diverse group of individuals, including staff, students and other healthcare professionals is recommended. Working knowledge of functional areas, workflows, and the HSAA Collective Agreements would be beneficial.
