Job summary

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant I at Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert to provide laboratory support with phlebotomy and specimen processing.

This Regular Part Time role features a 0.50 FTE and a shifting schedule across days, evenings, nights and weekends. You will perform phlebotomy for all ages, urinalysis, specimen processing, testing, entry and transport, with emphasis on accuracy and patient care.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
• Recent demonstrated phlebotomy experience within the last 12 months.
• URinalysis experience preferred and data entry, specimen processing and troubleshooting are valued.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality laboratory support at Sturgeon Community Hospital.
• Perform phlebotomy for adults, children and infants and ensure patient-centered care.
• Handle urinalysis, specimen entry, processing, transport and reporting of results.

Working along with other Health Care Professionals, the Laboratory Assistant I will provide Laboratory support to the Sturgeon Community Hospital. The primary responsibilities include phlebotomy for adults, children and infants using both macro and micro techniques while providing patient centered care, performing urinalysis, specimen entry, specimen processing and transport, troubleshooting problem specimens, and reception duties.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Must have a recent demonstrated experience - practicum or worked experience - with performing phlebotomy within the last year (12 months).

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience with EPIC Beaker - practicum or worked experience - within the last year is strongly preferred. Recent experience with urinalysis within the 2 years is preferred. Recent experience with data entry, specimen processing and troubleshooting is preferred. Recent experience using Rover is preferred. Worked experience with SPECTRE is an asset.
