Alberta Health Services is seeking a Laboratory Assistant I for a casual/relief role at the Arthur Child Cancer Centre. The position involves collecting fasting blood samples from ATP participants and performing basic lab tasks, with additional clerical duties and patient inquiries.
The role requires Grade 12 and completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program, with strong phlebotomy skills and TDG/WHMIS training recommended.
Alberta's Tomorrow Project (ATP; myatp.ca), housed within Cancer Care Alberta, is the largest research project ever undertaken in the province. Launched in 2000, this prospective cohort follows 55,000 participants for up to 50 years to examine how environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors relate to cancer and chronic disease, with the goal of improving understanding of their causes and prevention. ATP collects, processes, and stores data and biosamples, and shares them through standard access procedures with researchers at universities, health organizations, and research institutes in Alberta, Canada and abroad. This is a casual position that will be collecting fasting blood samples from ATP participants so candidates must have excellent phlebotomy skills. This position offers weekday shifts running from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Monday through Friday at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. This position may assist with tasks in the biobank and will perform basic data entry tasks.
As a Laboratory Assistant I, you will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including receiving and sorting specimens, cleaning and sanitizing lab equipment and performing basic lab tests. In addition, you will carry out essential clerical duties along with patient queries.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent. Strong phlebotomy skills are required with recent experience. Experience in safe handling of dry ice. TDG certification.
