Our Greenhouse located in Sombra, ON is currently seeking a Labour Manager to join our team. The essential function of this position is to maintain the operation of the Packhouse and the Greenhouse within the organization. Must maintain food safety, monitoring of GMP compliance and organization of essential Packhouse and Greenhouse documentation for daily, monthly and annual operation and auditing purposes. Acts as the primary point of contact with the corporate commodity planners to ensure sales orders and proper inventory levels are met. Must demonstrate leadership, mentoring skills to lead all subordinate supervisors and ensure that tasks are performed to meet minimum standard and minimum quality requirements.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Keep workers motivated by supervision and working along with them as well.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the Green House.
  • Ensure that crop work is done correctly and performing at a rate meeting minimum standards and quality.
  • Be able to clearly convey instructions and expectations of standards and quality to the employees.
  • Ensure that crop work progress is reported into Hortimax.
  • Regular worker evaluation based on quality and performance with the crop supervisors.
  • Ensure that pest, disease and equipment issues are reported and conveyed to appropriate authorities.
  • Make sure that all hygiene and cleanliness procedures are followed. Keep the area clean and tidy.
  • Make sure that all workers adhere to company policies, rules, regulation and protocols.
  • Perform corrective (disciplinary) measures with the assistance of Human Resources, if required, to achieve work targets and ensure adherence to all company rules.
  • Be able to maintain a pleasant, positive work atmosphere and team spirit, while achieving excellent efficiency and quality. Both with workers, management and colleagues.
  • Communicate progress and concerns to the General Manager.
  • Responsible for the overall productivity, safety and financial KPI’s in the Pack House.
  • Work with the General Manager to gather, monitor and report key cost and productivity data points.
  • Through the utilization of strong leadership and communication skills, a concentrated effort will be made to train, coach and mentor line leads and develop succession planning within the department.
  • Develops a labor schedule to minimize labor costs, while ensuring pack schedules are met.
  • Work with corporate commodity planners to maintain sales order schedules and proper inventory levels.
  • Responsible for the adherence to all established product specifications; is the key contact for any changes to the specs, and ensures proper communication and training is completed with the associates.
  • Monitor and enforce all of the established Food Safety protocols.
  • Ensures that the departmental organization and housekeeping are maintained daily.
  • Enforces all company policies, and when necessary, counsels and or documents performance issues with the employee while working closely with Human Resources.
  • Maintains strong communication with the shipping/receiving supervisor concerning packaging inventory, daily packaging requirements, and supplies and any outbound quality issues.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and team building skills are a necessity.
  • Proficiency in use of English language with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally, present information and direction, and field questions from managers, employees and external contacts.
  • Spanish as a second language would be an asset.
  • Must be a high-performance team player and be willing to work in a dynamic, growing, demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Must be a self-starter and willing to work flexible hours.
  • Must have ability to effectively follow-up and handle multiple projects with strong personal time management skills and effectively manage associated stress.
  • Highly proficient in computer-use skills (MS Office: Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to work independently with minimal supervision and take ownership of job.
  • Willingness to work with a high degree of professionalism and personal integrity.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills. Need to be creative, adaptable and able to accurately handle out of the ordinary issues with a sense of urgency.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively while addressing everyone in a respectful manner.
  • Ability to make changes as needed without notice.
Education/Background Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years related work experience at a similar level of responsibility required.
Working Conditions
  • Greenhouse Environment, where the temperature averages 70°F and background noise approaches 70
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 30 lbs.
