Job Summary
This position provides support to the assigned technology program with primary responsibilities including lab set up, inventory management, lab safety inspections, maintenance and repair, ordering, purchasing, disposing and reconciliations. The incumbent is responsible for communicating and working in a collaborative manner with the program area instructors, direct supervisor, and college employees to ensure the provision of quality, timely, and reliable support for student success.
Job Summary
This position provides support to the assigned technology program with primary responsibilities including lab set up, inventory management, lab safety inspections, maintenance and repair, ordering, purchasing, disposing and reconciliations. The incumbent is responsible for communicating and working in a collaborative manner with the program area instructors, direct supervisor, and college employees to ensure the provision of quality, timely, and reliable support for student success.
Specific Duties
- Working from specifications prepared by departmental faculty, the Lab Technician analyses, designs, documents, develops, training aids in support of courses, laboratory assignments and the departmental operation.
- Perform configuration and routine maintenance tasks pertaining to program training aids.
- Diagnose and resolve technical problems related to lab systems, software, hardware, and other training aids. Investigate issues thoroughly, identify root causes, and implement appropriate solutions to prevent recurrence.
- Perform lab inspections in designated program spaces at the beginning and end of each day in order to identify and rectify issues to maintain a safe working area in accordance with WorkSafe BC, WHMIS and school’s requirements and procedures.
- Provide prompt and effective support to faculty and students by assisting with laboratory-related issues and ensuring smooth operation of training aids.
- Maintain accurate records of issues, resolutions, and troubleshooting steps. Document common procedures and solutions to build a knowledge base for future reference and training purposes.
- Regularly perform inventory management process duties: receiving and inspecting products and verify condition; sorting and stocking; taking tools, equipment, or consumables out of service and disposal of products at end of life; and updating college inventory management system with addition and removal of products. This can include program consumables, tools, equipment, and safety products to support the program needs.
- Provide support for lab components by using appropriate communications as per School’s procedure by ensuring consumable needs for projects and practice are available and in stock; preparing and ensuring training aids and equipment are moved to requested location for use and in a ready to use state; and making available specialized tools from the equipment/inventory room by ensuring they are not double booked.
- Creating work order requests using college software and procedures for maintenance of the building/lab space where deficiencies are identified.
- Provide brief student supervisory support to instructors for safety purposes only.
- Attend departmental meetings to provide input on matters relating to the workshop and departmental procedures.
- Communicates with internal and external suppliers regarding the coordination of repair or warranty issues.
- Liaise with other College departments.

- Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor or designate.
Skills & Qualifications
- Recognized two (2 ) year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent
- 2 years or more of current and related work experience in relevant field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Fork Lift training required or willing to obtain within first 6 months of employment.
- Demonstrated expertise in troubleshooting and proficiency in diagnosing and resolving problems and issues related to program technologies and systems. High skill level with Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge of software/hardware applicable to program delivery.
- Current understanding and knowledge of emerging technologies, industry trends and best practices.
- Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks, manage workload efficiently, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision. Ability to handle multiple support requests concurrently while maintaining a high level of responsiveness and quality in service delivery.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams. Willingness to share knowledge, collaborate on solutions, and contribute to the success of projects.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact professionally with end-users, colleagues, and stakeholders. Ability to articulate technical concepts in a clear and concise manner, tailored to the audience’s level of understanding.
