About the Company

Ekona Power is a Vancouver-based breakthrough energy technology company developing a novel methane pyrolysis platform for low-cost, clean hydrogen production. This technology will have a significant and positive impact in a world trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address Climate Change.

This newly constructed pilot facility in Burnaby, British Columbia will be Ekona's first demonstration plant. The facility houses our proprietary hydrogen reactor that converts natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon.

Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our innovative team in Burnaby. This role is crucial in maintaining quality control, conducting various analytical tests, and supporting the development of our groundbreaking methane pyrolysis technology.

Reporting Relationship

  • Reports to: Carbon Program Manager
  • Direct Reports: None

Primary Objectives

  • Ensure accurate and timely laboratory analysis to support facility operations
  • Maintain laboratory quality standards and equipment integrity
  • Support process optimization through data collection and analysis
  • Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures and safety protocols

Job Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations

  • Conduct sampling and analysis using chromatography (GCFID, GCT), spectroscopy, and various physical/chemical separation techniques
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus
  • Set up and execute chemical experiments, tests, and analyses
  • Supervise and coordinate daily laboratory operations, including scheduling, inventory, and workflow management
  • Implement quality assurance programs and maintain quality standards
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance
  • Oversee procurement of lab supplies, reagents, and equipment
  • Collaborate with research or technical teams to support experiments and projects
  • Ensure proper disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste
  • Manage the physical layout of the laboratory, ensuring optimal placement of equipment and workstations for safety, efficiency, and workflow
  • Collect, prepare, and analyze process samples according to ASTM standards for carbon black

Documentation and Reporting

  • Compile and maintain accurate records for analytical studies
  • Complete logbooks and technical reports
  • Collect and analyze operational and experimental data
  • Develop, implement, and update laboratory policies, procedures, and quality assurance protocols

Quality and Safety

  • Assist in developing sampling and analysis programs
  • Contribute to the development of standards and health/safety measures
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Conduct regular process inspections
  • Monitor and adjust machine/equipment controls as needed

Skills and Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, or related field with +5 years experience (carbon black experience preferred)
  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques including chromatography and spectroscopy
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
