Job description

Description

The Lab Technician's primary duty is to provide support related to equipment setup, maintenance, safety, and delivery of laboratory and field sessions (including field trips and courses) at Thompson Rivers University.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain inventory of supplies and course-related equipment for the laboratory and field facilities.
  • Maintain laboratory and field work facilities by organizing cleaning, maintaining sample quality, and monitoring equipment use and maintenance.
  • Operate standard and specialized laboratory and field equipment.
  • Perform clerical duties including reception, faxing, photocopying, report processing, filing, result distribution, appointment booking, attendance recording, and data entry.
  • Compile statistical reports for monthly and yearly end reporting.
  • Schedule use of laboratory facilities for teaching and learning activities.
  • Organize laboratory setup and takedown in consultation with faculty.
  • Collaborate with faculty to optimize use of laboratory and field equipment and technology.
  • Train others in the use of laboratory and field equipment and technology.
  • Maintain a safe environment in the laboratory.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs as per accreditation and university standards.
  • Oversee work-study students in collaboration with faculty.
  • Adhere to safety and emergency management protocols for each department.

Requirements

EDUCATION: Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three years related laboratory or field experience

  • Prolonged sitting or standing
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, biological materials, electromagnetic fields, power tools, and low-energy radiation, depending on department
  • Ability to lift weights over 10 kg
  • Travel within British Columbia
