Job summary

Gay-Lea-Foods in Manitoba is seeking a Quality Lab Technician to manage day-to-day lab operations, conduct daily chemical tests, microbiological tests, and ensure calibrations and GMP compliance. You will perform pH, fat, moisture, and salt tests, environmental sampling, and maintain records.

The role requires post-secondary education in Food Science or Microbiology and at least two years of food industry experience.

Qualifications

• Requires lab testing experience and strong attention to detail.
• Knowledge of GMP/CFIA regulations is beneficial.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Conduct daily chemical tests (pH, fat, moisture, salt).
• Perform microbiological tests (Coliform, E. coli, Staph, yeast/mold).
• Carry out equipment calibrations in the plant.
• Conduct environmental testing (air quality, water, swabs).
• Maintain timely and accurate lab documentation.

Department: Quality

Reports to: Quality Supervisor

Status: Full-time

Shift: Evening shift (approx. 3:00 PM–11:30 PM or 4:00 PM–12:30 AM), with initial day-shift training and flexibility for potential rotation between day and evening shifts.

The pay range for the role is $41,000 to $68,300 plus bonus, comprehensive benefits, retirement savings plan, paid vacation, and other perks and opportunities.

Purpose:

Reporting to the Quality Supervisor, this position is responsible for day-to-day running of the lab including all required daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly tests and calibrations and as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Conducts daily chemical tests, including pH, fat, moisture and salt
• Performs microbiological tests, for Coliform, E. coli, Staph, yeast and mold
• Performs all necessary equipment calibrations within the plant
• Conducts environmental testing, including air quality, water and equipment swabs
• Performs lab documentation in a timely and accurate manner
• Cleans, prepares and maintains laboratory equipment
• Maintains a clean and safe lab area at all times
• Conducts daily GMP inspections
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Post-Secondary education in Food Science, Microbiology or related discipline
• Minimum 2 years of experience in the food industry
• Understanding of CFIA regulations and FSEP/SFCR requirements is an asset
• Experience with MS office applications (Excel, Word and Outlook)
• Ability to work off shift, various hours and some weekends
