Job description

Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, the Laboratory Technician 2nd Class performs standardized chemical, physical and microbiological tests used for monitoring the quality of drinking water. These duties are performed independently in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor.

Because the Authority's primary responsibility is to service the public 24 hours a day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand and on short notice during emergency conditions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Collects water samples from the water distribution systems.
  • Analyzes water for chemical and physical properties and performs tests according to EPA specifications for aquatic microbiology.
  • Verifies test results and maintains related records.
  • Standardizes all in-use laboratory equipment and maintains associated daily records.
  • Prepares media as needed and washes and sterilizes plastic and glassware.
  • Performs chemical analysis pertaining to drinking water quality.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience

High school diploma, or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in chemistry, physics and biology, and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in laboratory work involving the testing and analysis of water.
