Job Description

The Supervisor, Lab is ultimately responsible for effectively supervising the RESA Calgary laboratory, ensuring high lab performance and that daily operations plans are met, and that client expectations are exceeded. This position includes supervision of all analytical services, client services, and administrative functions of the laboratory. The supervising employee may also provide direct technical service support, including interpretation of test results, answering testing status or technical questions, or fulfilling special requests. Within the scope of authority, the employee is ultimately responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all analytical reports developed in the laboratory. The Supervisor, Lab reports directly to the General Manager.

Job Responsibilities
  • Ensuring that laboratory personnel receive adequate training, either by direct training or by assigning training responsibilities.
  • Directly supervising laboratory personnel or ensuring adequate supervision of them.
  • Providing recognition and constructive feedback as needed to ensure that employees fully understand their responsibilities, and performing laboratory personnel performance evaluations.
  • Building an enthusiastic team committed to service excellence.
  • Ensuring that safety procedures are followed and that employees are appropriately trained in laboratory safety.
  • Overseeing sample flow in the laboratory to ensure that turn‑around times are not exceeded and establishing appropriate sample testing priorities.
  • Assessing and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of in‑progress paperwork and analytical data.
  • Ensuring adherence to ASTM (or other) testing procedures and protocols and making necessary testing modifications for the analysis of difficult sample matrices.
  • Preparing and updating current laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and related quality documentation.
  • Ensuring that test data is accurately entered, and that analytical reports are generated in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensuring that completed test reports are reviewed for accuracy prior to release to customers.
  • Ensuring that appropriate laboratory supplies are available for use.
  • Supervising the sub‑contracting of tests, and the preparation and compilation of reports for clients.
  • Managing or assisting with special projects as required.
  • Installing, calibrating, repairing and maintaining equipment as required.
  • Providing technical and trouble‑shooting support for testing and equipment maintenance.
  • Serving as the company’s representative to the lab employees, communicating and enforcing company policies, and assisting with problem solving between employees and senior management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Equipment Commissioning And Validation
  • In conjunction with the General Manager, assess instrument particulars for suitability to application.
  • In conjunction with the General Manager, ensure that equipment pre‑arrival requirements are met.
  • Assist with installation, calibration, system performance evaluation and confirmation that equipment meets required performance specifications.
  • Proficient in ICP‑AES/OES, GC‑MS, GC‑FID commissioning.
Test Method Validation
  • Rigorous validation of test methods, including instrument performance metrics, to ensure conformance to normatively referenced test method standards and in‑house performance and QC requirements, including:
  • High resolution (near ppb) metals analysis.
  • Oxidation inhibitor (by GC‑MS characterization and quantification).
  • Methanol and ethanol (in oil/hydrocarbon) analysis.
  • Reception, verification and maintenance of Certified Reference Materials, Reagents, Consumables, and Equipment related materials, including equipment subcomponents and instrument Consumables.
  • Performing Evaluative Determinations of Reference and routine materials required for Test Method Validation and ongoing laboratory QC requirements.
  • Designing and implementing appropriate Test Method Validation processes.
  • Documenting the Test Method Validations and Equipment processes to applicable accreditation standards.
  • Preparing robust, technically accurate and comprehensive Test Method Validation report.
Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field.

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining various chromatographic instrument technologies such as GC‑FID, GC‑MS, GC‑TCD, GC‑ECD.
  • 5+ years of experience in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining various spectroscopic instruments such as ICP‑AES, UV‑Vis spectrophotometer, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR).
  • Demonstrated expertise in performing chemical and physical analyses of petrochemical products and their derivatives in reference to standard test methods such as ASTM, IEC, and BS methods.
  • Experience in the analysis of physical, chemical, and electrical properties of insulating fluids in accordance with ASTM/IEC methods and IEEE/CIGRE guidelines.
  • Extensive knowledge in operating, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting of other various analytical equipment such as Karl Fischer Moisture Analyzer, Potentiometric and coulometric titrators, Digital Density meters, Flashpoint analyzers, Refractometers, Viscometers, High Vacuum equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in analytical method creation/validation using statistical analysis methods and following guidelines from reputable organizations such as ASTM, EPA, IEC, & ISO.
  • Extensive knowledge in ISO 17025:2017 requirements, compliance, and implementation.
  • Must be able to work safely and adhere to all safety procedures.
