Job description

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Planning, scheduling, reviewing, and approving tests and data: Ensure tests are executed according to order requirements. Supervise laboratory technicians in daily activities such as shift hand-offs, work prioritization, enforcement of plant rules, incident investigations, and coverage planning. Communicate with Manufacturing, Logistics, and Q&T personnel regarding test status and planning.
  2. Planning test requirements: Review customer specifications and ensure documentation reflects required testing. Confirm that test requirements can be executed at Toronto Lab or approved test houses. Plan non-standard tests for metallurgist investigations or MPE needs.
  3. Scheduling and executing tests: Receive materials, schedule tests based on production schedules or plant priorities, monitor progress, and communicate status. Coordinate with external locations and test houses for sample transfer and data exchange.
  4. Reviewing and approving test data: Ensure completion of all tests, verify results meet specifications, communicate failures or retest needs, and approve conforming tests in LIMS/STAR.
  5. Supervising lab technicians: Lead, evaluate, and coach staff. Communicate goals, enforce policies, maintain safety and cleanliness, resolve questions, and ensure timely processing of samples. Manage shift coverage, overtime, and vacation scheduling. Promote safe working practices.
  6. Educational requirements: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, or related field preferred. Two or more years of experience in a mechanical test laboratory environment preferred.
