Job Responsibilities:
- Planning, scheduling, reviewing, and approving tests and data: Ensure tests are executed according to order requirements. Supervise laboratory technicians in daily activities such as shift hand-offs, work prioritization, enforcement of plant rules, incident investigations, and coverage planning. Communicate with Manufacturing, Logistics, and Q&T personnel regarding test status and planning.
- Planning test requirements: Review customer specifications and ensure documentation reflects required testing. Confirm that test requirements can be executed at Toronto Lab or approved test houses. Plan non-standard tests for metallurgist investigations or MPE needs.
- Scheduling and executing tests: Receive materials, schedule tests based on production schedules or plant priorities, monitor progress, and communicate status. Coordinate with external locations and test houses for sample transfer and data exchange.
- Reviewing and approving test data: Ensure completion of all tests, verify results meet specifications, communicate failures or retest needs, and approve conforming tests in LIMS/STAR.
- Supervising lab technicians: Lead, evaluate, and coach staff. Communicate goals, enforce policies, maintain safety and cleanliness, resolve questions, and ensure timely processing of samples. Manage shift coverage, overtime, and vacation scheduling. Promote safe working practices.
- Educational requirements: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, or related field preferred. Two or more years of experience in a mechanical test laboratory environment preferred.
