Background
RayzeBio is a dynamic biotechnology company headquartered in San Diego, CA. Launched in late 2020 and recently acquired by Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) as a wholly owned subsidiary, the company is focused on improving survival of people with cancer by harnessing the power of targeted radioisotopes. RayzeBio will operate as a standalone entity within the BMS organization, maintaining its biotech culture with the opportunity to leverage the best-in-class oncology capabilities of BMS. RayzeBio is developing innovative drugs against targets of solid tumors. The lead asset, RYZ101, is in Phase 3 testing for patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs), as well as earlier stage testing for patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Job Description
We are looking for a proactive, dynamic, and service-oriented Lab Manager to actively manage and support daily lab operations at RayzeBio. This hands-on role will work closely with the Biology, Translational, DMPK, and In Vivo teams to provide essential lab support and ensure smooth operations. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with experience in lab asset management and a solid understanding of safety regulations. This is an on-site position based in San Diego. The role requires the ability and willingness to work in an environment where radioactive isotopes are utilized. This position offers an exciting opportunity to directly contribute to lab operations, enabling scientists to conduct groundbreaking research in radiopharmaceutical innovations aimed at revolutionizing cancer treatment.

Job Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for lab members on the following matters:
  • Providing immediate assistance to resolve any operational or technical issues that may arise including equipment malfunctions.
  • Managing resource shortages and coordinating solutions to ensure smooth daily lab operations.
  • Actively collaborate with lab team members to quickly identify operational challenges and implement effective solutions to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing research and experiments.
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to, and implementation of, lab safety protocols.
  • Source, order, and manage stock of lab equipment and consumables (including flammables and solvents), identify alternatives, and negotiate pricing.
  • Oversee the lifecycle management of lab equipment, including service contracts, repairs, calibrations, preventative maintenance, and record retention.
  • Manage and provide daily support for lab operations, identifying areas for improvement, addressing issues, and recommending solutions to optimize lab infrastructure and support.
  • Review and assess equipment service contracts and CAPEX/Non-CAPEX quotes based on team budget and needs, making recommendations or determining the best course of action.
  • Build and maintain relationships with vendors, sales reps, and service providers. Manage software updates and coordinate training for lab instruments.
  • Maintain a well-organized lab with proper inventory management and ensure adherence to regulatory compliance standards.
  • Coordinate lab space allocation for new employees, incoming equipment, and lab relocations, ensuring efficient space utilization and handling any changes.
  • Organize, schedule, and lead monthly lab meetings, prepare agendas, document action items, and follow up on open items.
  • Manage and organize fridge and freezer spaces, regularly defrosting and maintaining freezers, and coordinating with team members to manage the movement of items.
  • Coordinate cleaning schedule for the lab and ensure tissue culture equipment is properly maintained.
  • Assist with decontamination of Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) and incubators as required.
  • Update maps and documentation for equipment, outlets, and work areas for the main lab, tissue culture room, and radioactive tissue culture room.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, Facilities, IT, Security, and Finance teams.

Education and Experience

  • BA/BS in Life Sciences or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum of 5+ years' work experience in scientific lab operations preferably as a Lab Manager
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Lab Operations and lab equipment
  • Knowledge of lab safety protocols (including Cal/OHSA) and hazardous waste management

  • Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, have excellent interpersonal skills and a sense of accountability, and a desire to support others
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to interact and communicate with multiple personalities and prioritize competing needs
  • Strong understanding of scientific concepts and terminology
  • Must be able to follow instructions and maintain a safe work environment

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
This is a position that requires working in a laboratory environment, protective clothing, gloves, and safety glasses are required while working in a laboratory environment with radioactive materials.

Work Environment
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $118,300 -$143,300 plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
