This position will commence July 1, 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and end June 30, 2026, with a possibility of renewal.

One of Canada’s youngest and most ambitious universities, CBU recognizes its location on Cape Breton Island as part of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. CBU offers a comprehensive set of liberal arts, science, and professional programs and a unique commitment to community, economic development, aboriginal learning, and research into many aspects of environment and culture. Currently, home to approximately 5000 students, CBU’s vision of higher education allows students to pursue diverse fields of study in programs with national reputations in final-year student satisfaction, faculty-student interaction, and employability.

CBU delivers an authentic multicultural experience to all who become part of its community. Our faculty bring passion to their teaching and research, and we are known for our smaller class sizes and our friendly and inclusive culture. Strong community involvement and a spirit of entrepreneurship enhance CBU’s position in post-secondary education.

Pivotal to the experiential learning ethos of CBU’s Communication program is the Dr. Mary A. Lynch Communication Lab. The longest running Communication Lab in North America, this facility creates opportunities for hands-on experiential learning and for students to develop critical reflection and self-awareness skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for laboratory preparation and instruction in the following courses: Interpersonal Communication, Public Communication, and Issues in Media Studies. The potential for expansion into other areas of Communication exists and the applicant must be capable of adapting accordingly. The Communication Lab Instructor will facilitate experiential learning labs, conduct ongoing assessment of students’ performance (cognitively, affectively, and behaviourally), supervise Communication Lab Peer Facilitators, engage in research to update lesson plans, maintain lab materials and equipment, and assist the Communication Lab Coordinator with day-to-day administrative duties.

In addition to working in the Dr. Mary A. Lynch Communication Lab, the successful applicant will support the development and coordination of a Communication Centre, providing expertise and assistance to students, faculty, staff, and the community. Opportunities for classroom instruction may be available depending on demand and the successful applicant’s qualifications.

Applicants must have a minimum of aBachelor’s degree with a Major in Communication, although preference will be given to candidates with higher degrees in Communication, with related fields being considered. Applicants must have experience facilitating experiential learning, preferably in a lab context, and understanding of experiential pedagogy. Additional related experience is considered an asset. Candidates with administrative capabilities, academic research experience, creative project experience, organizational abilities, and leadership skills will be ranked highly. Knowledge of multimedia-based teaching strategies and experience with online teaching and learning platforms is considered an asset. Reporting to the Chair, the successful candidate will work closely with the Communication Lab Coordinator, Senior Lab Instructors, Department Members, Communication Lab Peer Facilitators, and all Communication Lab students. Therefore, collegiality and teamwork are essential skills.

CBU teaches programs on campus, off campus in locations across and outside of Canada, and on-line.The university and its partners will, therefore, provide opportunities for faculty members to teach in different modes in different locations as part of their regular workload. However, the applicant must commit to an on-campus presence for the term of their hire.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate potential and commitment with regard to teaching activities and service to Cape Breton University, community and profession.

Applications for the successful candidate will include:

  • a cover letter describing the expertise of the applicant
  • a complete resume (or CV)
  • a copy of academic transcripts
  • A list of least three references.
    • Short listed candidates will be required to submit three reference letters.
