Job summary

Kiewit Power Engineering, Calgary, is seeking mid-level and senior Electrical Designers to support EPC project design for power generation. Designers develop duct bank, conduit and cable tray designs from concept to completion, leading with 3D models and field collaboration.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s or College degree in Drafting and Design or related discipline is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in electrical design.
  • Experience with Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) is required.
  • Experience with National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) is highly preferred.
  • Experience with underground designs from concept to completion.
  • Experience in cable tray, grounding and lighting from concept to completion.
  • Experience in SmartPlant 3D.

Responsibilities

  • Design duct bank, embedded conduit, cable tray, grounding and lighting systems from concept to completion.
  • Perform calculations to size and check conduit and cable tray fill according to CEC.
  • Develop 3D models and check for interferences and constructability.
  • Route electrical cables in a 3D environment to generate a cable schedule.
  • Model electrical components using vendor submittals.
  • Coordinate with project team using project database functions.
  • Provide field support to resolve construction issues.

Position Overview

The Kiewit Power Engineering Group is seeking several mid-level and senior Electrical Designers to join our growing Calgary team! The ideal candidates will support EPC project design work for power generation projects. The Electrical Designers are responsible for developing detailed raceway designs including duct bank, embedded conduit and cable tray from concept to completion. In this role, you will lead and collaborate with Kiewit's construction teams to approach construction-drive engineering with a focus on safe, cost effective, and innovative designs that achieve client expectations and further Kiewit's legacy of excellence.

Location

This position is based out of Calgary, Alberta.

Responsibilities
  • Design duct bank, embedded conduit, cable tray, grounding and lighting systems from concept to completion utilizing engineering documents, sketches or vendor data.
  • Perform calculations to size and check allowable fill in conduits and cable tray systems according to Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) requirements.
  • Develops 3D models utilizing drawings, sketches, and design skills. Checks and navigates in the 3D models for interferences and constructability.
  • Routes electrical cables in a 3D environment to generate a cable schedule.
  • Model electrical components using vendor submittals and electrical designs.
  • Perform calculations to size pull boxes according to CEC requirements.
  • Utilize applicable engineering national and local codes.
  • Reports project progression updates and/or issues to project lead team.
  • Coordinates with project team by utilizing the Project Database, such as Request for Review Process, Holds List, ECN, Request for information from other disciplines, and all other applicable functions.
  • Gathers information needed to develop design and verify voltage separation requirements are met.
  • Analyze, inspect, and construct designs while adhering to electrical quality standards and department procedures.
  • Checks design for consistency, safety, operability, and maintenance requirements before submitting to checking.
  • Resolves checked drawings; prove and understand comments made.
  • Completes miscellaneous tasks to support project development.
  • Acts as a field resource to assist construction in field resolution on issues.
Qualifications

  • Power generation experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) is required.
  • Experience with National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) is highly preferred.
  • Experience with underground designs from concept to completion.
  • Experience in cable tray, grounding and lighting from concept to completion.
  • Experience in SmartPlant 3D.
  • Experience in MicroStation or AutoCAD.
  • Must be able to conceptualize in a 3D environment.
  • Ability to work in a growing, adaptive and multi-discipline team environment.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direction and oversight.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
