About Us - Kingston Interval House (KIH) provides essential, responsive, and empowering services to women, children and youth who have experienced the impact of violence against women. Kingston Interval House is part of a global movement that seeks to ensure the human rights of all women.

Through our mission, we work towards changing the structural and broader social, political, and economic circumstances that render women and their children vulnerable to gender-based violence and other forms of oppression.

We are incredibly excited about this role! KIH is a feminist organization, provides emergency shelter, Second Stage Housing, and community counselling services to abused women and their children. KIH is committed to intersectional, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive practice, KIH is a leader in the sector and will remain a strong and outspoken advocate with and for women (trans and cis), non-binary people, children and youth to live free from harm, violence and abuse. Executive Director - Permanent Full-time

The Executive Director is the operational leader of the organization, managing a leadership team that oversees the programs and services provided for survivors of violence. The Executive Director will provide organizational vision and mission guidance; management support; financial oversight of resources; strategic insight; advocacy; and non-judgmental, supportive feminist leadership.

A typical day for the Executive Director includes the following tasks and responsibilities:

• Human Resource oversight for KIH supporting various management needs
• Financial oversight and management of organization’s budget
• Connecting with funders, partners, and clients to help guide strategic planning
• Direct liaising with funders, collaborators, and community partners
• Checking emails, calls, schedules for organizational needs and priorities
• Attending external committee meetings
• Providing support and guidance to managers and administrative staff
• Oversight of managers’ program planning and evaluation

Leadership and Culture

• Operationalizes KIH’s mission and strategic priorities of the organization in conjunction with the Board of Directors.
• Stewardship of KIH programs and services and implementation of the organizational strategic plan, operational plan, and any other business plans of KIH.
• Working with the Community and Shelter Managers, plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates the programs and activities of KIH to ensure that objectives are attained and client needs are recognized and met.
• Provides advice and support to the KIH Board and governance committees as appropriate.
• Employs a leadership style that values respect, equity, teamwork, and transparency.
• Implements and maintains a robust performance management process for all employees.
• Responds to and effectively manages complaints in the workplace.
• Facilitates conflict resolution and complaint procedure regarding employees and clients.
• Maintains appropriate documentation and personnel records.

Financial and Operations

• With the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership Team, oversees the development and execution of comprehensive development strategies that enhance revenue from individual donors, foundations, and corporations to sustain and further develop KIH programs and services.
• Prepares an annual budget in conjunction with the Bookkeeper.
• Operates within the limits of the total approved budget and informs the Board of the quarterly status of the organization’s financial position.
• Ensures operational policies and procedures are up to date, relevant, well communicated and understood.
• Monitors policies and procedures for effectiveness and compliance.

An Executive Director should have the following competencies, skills, and experience: The Executive Director requires experience and training in non-profit operational management and administration to effectively guide the delivery of KIH’s programs and services and to deliver on the organizational mandate. The ability to actively listen and provide guidance and direction in a solutions-focused, responsive manner is essential to the position. A strong and demonstrable understanding and modeling of intersectional feminism and how to apply an anti-racist and anti-oppressive leadership lens is a critical competency. The Executive Director must be able to demonstrate values alignment with KIH core values.

The following experience and qualifications are important to this position:

• A minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in leadership roles, including experience directly related to non-profit management, systems advocacy, and fund development.
• A strong and demonstrable understanding of intimate partner violence (IPV), gender based violence (GBV) and the systemic factors that undermine women’s safety, security, and human rights.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking experience.
• Proven fund development skills in a non-profit environment that includes establishing diverse contributed and earned income sources.
• Experience reporting to and working with a diverse board of directors, including retaining and engaging those directors.
• Experience managing within a unionized work environment and Collective Bargaining.
• Experience in leading and working with a multi-disciplinary and diverse staff.
• A passion for serving the survivors of the domestic violence community, creating a culture that allows for self-sufficiency and growth.
• A combination of education and experience in nonprofit management, social service work, or public administration.

What is the mental and physical effort to be an Executive Director?

The nature of this most senior management position requires less physical effort and more mental effort. The nature of the mental effort includes the ability to simultaneously engage in multiple tasks interconnected to KIH’s strategic plan, program objectives, and organizational mandate. The communication and administrative aspects of the position require the Executive Director to ensure strong communication skills, time management, active listening skills, and the ability to navigate difficult interpersonal situations and conflicts toward solution-focused resolutions for the best interest of the Kingston Interval House clients.

Positive Impact Indicators for the Executive Director:

• The Executive Director advocates for the organization and collaborates with other agencies that affect the community’s social service sector, with a particular focus on intimate partner violence, gender-based violence, and women’s safety and security.
• The Executive Director professionally represents the organization by serving as a public spokesperson with the media and other key constituents, including liaising with all levels of government.
• The Executive Director oversees the development and execution of a solid fund and development plan. The Executive Director maintains strong relationships and provides ongoing support with a diverse Board of Directors. They should also assist with identifying and developing new Board members and key civic volunteers to leverage the organization's strategies.
• The Executive Director develops the organization's internal resources, including implementing and strengthening systems and procedures to enhance and sustain its operations.
• The Executive Director collects and reports data monthly to the Board of Directors to inform advocacy work and decision-making.
• The Executive Director recruits, trains, and retains staff that have technical and personal abilities to further the mission.
• The Executive Director ensures that funding requirements and reports are completed accurately and on time.
• The Executive Director fosters a respectful, supportive, and safer working environment for all KIH staff and clients.

Salary: $100,000 to $115,000 per year.
