About the Opportunity
The K-12 Teacher Recruitment And Retention Specialist plays a key role in developing and implementing strategies to increase the number of qualified métis educators in British Columbia. This position supports the recruitment, training, and retention of K-12 teachers by collaborating with post-secondary institutions, school districts, and Métis Chartered Communities. The Specialist works within MNBC’s Ministry of Education’s guidelines and MNBC policies to strengthen Métis representation in the teaching profession and ensure culturally responsive education for Métis learners.
Key responsibilities include developing and executing a teacher recruitment and retention strategy, conducting community outreach to assess workforce needs, and facilitating the creation of a Métis educators’ network to provide professional development and peer support. The Specialist also fosters partnerships with post-secondary institutions, school districts, and education stakeholders to enhance access to teacher training programs that integrate Métis perspectives. Additionally, this role involves supporting the creation of innovative educational materials, advocating for Métis inclusion in teacher education programs, and providing strategic insights on workforce development. The Specialist supports MNBC’s broader vision for advancing métis education across the province.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruitment and Retention Strategy Development
• Develops and implement a Métis K-12 Teacher Recruitment and Retention Strategy to increase the number of qualified Métis educators working in K-12 education across BC.
• Oversees the development and implementation of initiatives, programs, and projects that support the recruitment, retention, and professional development of K-12 Métis educators in British Columbia, in alignment.
with the Ministry of Education's mandate, MNBC policies, and funding contract outcomes.
• Conducts community outreach and engagement with K-12 teachers, school districts, and post-secondary institutions to assess the immediate and long-term needs for Métis educator recruitment and retention.
Partnerships and Community Collaboration
• Collaborates with the Ministry of Education, school districts, and post-secondary institutions to develop and deliver Métis-focused educational programs and culturally responsive teaching strategies.
• Builds and maintain strong relationships with Métis Chartered Communities to support and enhance educational capacity, representation, and culturally relevant teaching practices in schools.
• Represents MNBC in education-related committees, advisory groups, and project teams as required.
Professional Development and Community Building
• Designs and facilitate a Métis K-12 Educators Community of Practice to create professional development opportunities, mentorship programs, and networking spaces for teachers.
• Supports the planning and execution of Métis-specific educational initiatives, including professional development workshops, conferences, and training sessions for K-12 educators.
Policy and Curriculum Development Support.
• Supports the development and implementation of educational policies, practice guidelines, and curriculum resources that align with Métis knowledge, traditions, and perspectives.
• Provides timely feedback and analysis, using a Métis-specific lens, to the Manager of K-12 Education on programming, policy development, ministry initiatives, and reports.
Other Duties
• Participates in committees and project teams as required.
• Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of the position.
• Other duties may be assigned as needed to ensure the efficient operation of MNBC.
• Regular/ occasional attendance at meetings/ events that may require work and travel outside of normal business hours.
Supervision Given
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Resources, or a related field from a recognized, post-secondary
institution.
• Minimum two (2) years' experience in K-12 education or recruitment/retention within the public-school system.
• Eligible for formal professional or technical registration in the appropriate area of expertise.
• A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may be considered.
• Experience working with K-12 students, educators, and families.
• Previous experience in recruitment or talent management within the education sector is preferred.
• Previous experience working in an Indigenous Community, with strong knowledge of Metis culture and history, is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, problem solve and utilize team-building skills.
• Proven ability to utilize strong interpersonal skills to deal with others effectively.
• Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision.
• Proven ability to utilize, adapt and embrace new technologies, including MS Word, Excel and other database/software required by the role.
• Knowledge and/or awareness of the historical and contemporary contributions made by Metis people in B.C.
• Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Class 5 driver's license may be required.
• The position may require the completion of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
