Junior Wetland and Vegetation Ecologist

Overall Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

  • Upland and wetland vegetation identification.
  • Delineation and classification of Alberta wetlands.
  • Characterization of wetland soils.
  • Support or lead vegetation field work and assessments involving community characterization, ecosite classification, weed assessments, vegetation management plans, restoration/planting plans, and vegetation reclamation assessments.
  • Support or lead wetland field work and assessments involving field wetland identification and delineation, wetland classification, shallow groundwater monitoring, water quality monitoring, wetland impact assessments and mitigation plans, including WAIFs and WAIRs, and wetland reclamation assessments.
  • Author vegetation and wetland technical reports.
  • Awareness of environmental regulations and guidelines.
  • Data entry and analysis.
  • Responsible for personal safety and following safe working practices according to Worley occupational health and safety procedures, and in accordance with industry standards.
  • Travel throughout Alberta to conduct fieldwork in diverse and remote environments, with flexibility for varying durations, especially during the summer months.
  • Work independently or as part of multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Travel as required for various field programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in wetland, botanical science, environmental resource management, or equivalent experience/education.
  • Eligibility for registration (or active registration) with a professional association (e.g., P.Biol., P.Ag., R.T.Biol.) in Alberta is required. Designation or eligibility for designation as an Authenticating Professional for wetlands in Alberta is an asset.
  • Foundational experience in vegetation and wetland ecology and plant identification.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Physical ability to work safely and be comfortable traversing uneven terrain.
  • Must hold a valid Alberta driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Self-starter and flexible team player.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Excellent computer skills; and
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
