Junior to Intermediate Hydrotechnical Engineer - Pipelines (2024102531)

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Junior to Intermediate Hydrotechnical Engineer specializing in surface water assessments and mitigations for linear infrastructure projects to join our team in Calgary, Alberta.

As our Hydrotechnical Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and leadership on projects and for staff, including performing technical analyses where appropriate.
  • Provide support in coordination, preparation of cost estimates, tender submissions, technical documentation, client reports, progress reports, project scheduling/resourcing, and meeting deadlines and budgets on projects.
  • Scoping projects and assisting in the preparation of proposals.
  • Working with independent subject matter experts to complete hydrotechnical assessments and mitigations, often as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Support mentoring, coaching, and training of staff.
  • Help promote Thurber mission, vision, and values amongst Thurber staff.
  • Work with the Branch Manager in the development of new business opportunities.
  • Establishing, developing, promoting, and maintaining relationships with clients.
  • Active participation in the field on a project-specific basis as dictated by the needs of the project to meet client expectations and project objectives.
  • Manage projects and lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Travel to project locations, as well as to Client offices and other Thurber Branch offices.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a post-secondary program in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Geoscience with a hydrotechnical focus and/or related subsequent work experience.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license.
  • Comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments.
  • Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites.
  • Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required.
  • Qualify for Membership with APEGA and/or EGBC.
  • Graduate Degree (Masters or higher).
  • General knowledge of fluvial geomorphology.
  • Able to conduct desktop and field level scour and bank erosion assessments.
  • Experience with hydrotechnical assessment, modelling, and mitigation design.
  • Experience on linear infrastructure projects.
  • Experienced in the use of commercial analytical software packages in the assessment of peak and seasonal flows.
  • Experience completing flood frequency analysis (FFA).
  • Experience with climate monitoring and applications of climate data.
  • Understanding of river hydraulics, channel behaviour, river process and sediment transport.
  • General knowledge of in-stream permitting requirements and construction practices.
  • P.Eng. status with APEGA and/or EGBC would be an asset.

  • Criminal Record Check may be conducted.
  • Drug and alcohol testing may be required prior to accessing client sites.
  • 3 Year Driver's Abstract and a Claims Experience Letter will be requested.
