What You'll Do:
As a Junior Technology Development/Process Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of innovating and optimizing Solex's unique moving bed heat exchanger technology. Working within our technical team, you'll focus on advanced thermal modeling, simulation, and experimental validation to enhance performance and develop next-generation solutions. You'll contribute to diverse projects across various industries, applying our technology to optimize existing processes and pioneer new applications. Throughout these projects, you'll be supported by a team of experienced engineers and scientists, providing you with opportunities to expand your expertise.
Primary Responsibilities (Modeling, Optimization, and Experimental):
- Support the development and validation of Solex's advanced thermal models involving generalized integral transforms, numerical methods, and other techniques.
- Develop and implement optimization algorithms and software tools (using Python or similar languages) to automate design processes, analyze performance data, and enhance the efficiency of Solex's heat exchangers.
- Design and execute experiments, including developing experimental plans and conducting hands-on lab work, to validate thermal models, gather data for model refinement, and contribute to new technology development.
- Develop and implement comprehensive process simulations (e.g., using Aspen/HYSYS) that incorporate detailed equipment models and explore integrating proprietary Python models, allowing Solex to expand its optimization services and provide integrated solutions.
- Support the development of new multiphase transport models based on lab experimentation and theoretical analysis.
- Establish data requirements for equipment performance validation and carry out post-processing activities.
Secondary Responsibilities (Process Engineering and Project Tasks):
- Optimize the thermal design of heat exchangers of challenging projects – focusing on improving performance and efficiency.
- Support the development of process engineering deliverables including: Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Heat & Material Balances (HMBs), Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and Process Control Narratives.
- Support field commissioning activities and troubleshoot equipment for first-of-kind projects – focused on achieving and/or optimizing thermal performance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent (with high academic standing) from a Canadian university.
- Eligible for registration as an EIT in Alberta.
- 0-5 years of relevant experience in process engineering or technology development.
- Strong academic foundation in heat transfer, transport phenomena, and thermodynamics.
- Knowledge of process simulation software (e.g., Aspen/HYSYS) and high proficiency in programming languages like Python.
- Demonstrated experience applying numerical methods, integral transforms, and hybrid techniques to solve heat transfer problems.
Skills:
- Thermal modeling expertise: Demonstrated ability to apply integral transform methods, numerical methods, and hybrid techniques for solving heat transfer problems.
- Strong programming skills: Proficiency in Python (or similar languages) for developing optimization algorithms, data analysis, and automation of engineering tasks.
- Problem-solving and critical thinking: Proven ability to analyze complex problems, identify solutions, and make sound engineering judgments.
- Data analysis and visualization: Ability to analyze and interpret experimental data, perform statistical analyses, and create visualizations to communicate findings effectively.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, project managers, and clients.
- Adaptability and initiative: Capacity to adapt to changing project requirements and take initiative to drive innovation and improvements.
- Experience with machine learning/AI: Familiarity with applying machine learning and AI techniques to analyze data, build predictive models, and optimize processes is considered a plus.
