Job summary

WSP is seeking a Junior Rock Mechanics Lab Technician to support laboratory testing of rock core samples for environmental, materials, and infrastructure projects locally and globally.

You will work with a team that values precision, safety, and innovation, performing routine tests, logging results, and assisting with setup and cleanup in a well‑equipped lab.

Qualifications

• A college diploma or certificate in geological technology, civil engineering technology, construction/materials engineering, or a related field.
• Experience with sample handling, mineral identification, and site investigations through academic, co‑op, or entry‑level roles.
• Exposure to materials or geotechnical testing through labs, internships, or early‑career roles.
• Familiarity with basic laboratory practices and materials testing equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine laboratory testing on rock core samples per standard methods and specs.
• Prepare, label, log, and manage samples for accurate tracking and traceability.
• Operate lab equipment for rock core testing including load frames and direct shear apparatus.
• Record observations and test results in logs, templates, and digital systems.
• Follow health, safety, and quality procedures to maintain a safe lab environment.
• Assist senior technicians and technologists with test setup, equipment cleaning, and lab organization.

As a Junior Rock Mechanics Lab Technician, you will help deliver accurate, high‑quality laboratory work that supports environmental, materials, and infrastructure projects both locally and globally. Your Impact

In this role, you will:

• Perform routine laboratory testing on rock core samples in accordance with standard methods and specifications.
• Prepare, label, log, and manage samples to maintain accurate tracking and traceability.
• Operate laboratory equipment for rock core testing, including load frames, direct shear apparatus, and sample cutting and grinding equipment.
• Accurately record observations and test results in laboratory logs, templates, and digital systems.
• Follow health, safety, and quality procedures to maintain a safe and organized laboratory environment.
• Support senior technicians and technologists by assisting with test setup, equipment cleaning, and general lab organization.

• Experience with sample handling, mineral identification, and/or site investigations, gained through academic, co‑op, or entry‑level experience.
• Exposure to materials or geotechnical testing through academic labs, internships, co‑op terms, or early‑career roles.
• Familiarity with basic laboratory practices and materials testing equipment.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to perform repetitive testing tasks accurately in a laboratory environment.
• Ability to safely lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs as part of routine laboratory duties.
• A demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, teamwork, and developing technical skills related to rock testing and engineering properties.

Compensation

• AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $51,800 – $68,600
• MB & ON: $47,200 – $65,000
• NB, NL, NS, PEI & QC: $46,800 – $62,100
