Job summary

The Town of Erin is recruiting a Junior Planner to provide professional planning support for development applications and policy initiatives within the Planning and Development Services department.   • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; CloudPermit experience an asset

Responsibilities

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Manager of Planning and Development and the Senior Planner, the Junior Planner provides professional planning support for a variety of development applications, planning projects, and policy initiatives. The successful incumbent will contribute to the effective delivery of the Town's planning and development services while supporting responsible community growth.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide exceptional customer service and professional planning information to residents, applicants, consultants, and the public regarding land use planning matters and planning applications.
  • Coordinate the intake, circulation, tracking, and administration of planning applications, including maintaining records, processing fees, filing applications, preparing notices, and managing related documentation for planning processes such as Official Plan Amendments, Zoning By-law Amendments, Draft Plans of Subdivision, Part Lot Control, Site Plan Control, and Committee of Adjustment applications.
  • Draft planning reports including recommendations on land use and planning applications, based on sound planning principles, including coordinating, circulating and evaluating of comments from internal departments, agencies, the public and Council.
  • Attend public meetings to present and respond to questions from Committee members, Council, residents, applicants, agencies, and the public.
  • Coordinate the review and analysis of development proposals and planning applications, including conducting zoning compliance reviews.
  • Assist with the administration of the Committee of Adjustment, including preparation of notices, tracking appeal periods, supporting the Secretary-Treasurer function, and providing technical information to Committee members.
  • Generate Labels and Mailouts (Public Meetings, COA, Heritage, etc.) and perform other general administrative duties as required.
  • Assist the Zoning Examiner with preparing Property Information Reports as required.
  • Maintain the Planning and Committee of Adjustment inbox and assist with other general inbox monitoring and correspondence as required.
  • Assist with special studies and support related to planning matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Post-secondary degree in Planning or a related field from a recognized university or equivalent with a minimum of three (3) years of related experience, preferably in a municipal environment; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Eligibility for membership with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)
  • Sound knowledge of municipal planning principles, planning legislation (the Planning Act), Committee of Adjustment functions, Official Plans, Zoning By-laws, Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) processes, development review processes, heritage conservation, urban design concepts, and local government functions.
  • Ability to coordinate and administer various development processes and provide excellent customer service to diverse client groups.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to deal courteously and effectively with all levels of staff and the public
  • Ability to use discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Excellent research, analytical, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain attention to detail, and work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong commitment to fostering a healthy, safe, and respectful workplace.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with CloudPermit or related software would be considered an asset.
  • Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the Town.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT
  • This position works 35 hours a week, typically between the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm, Monday to Friday, however the incumbent may also work outside of regular business hours to attend meetings and / or urgent matters.
  • Time worked outside of regular business hours for committee meetings, council meetings, etc. may be flexed with regular hours on a one to one (1-1) basis
  • This position will be eligible to apply for a hybrid work agreement in accordance with the Telecommuting Policy (currently up to 2 days’ remote work per week, subject to annual review and application)
