Job summary

Thales Canada is seeking a Junior Mechanical Engineer to support the Engineering Change Program for the Royal Canadian Navy's Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) and Joint Support Ship (JSS) fleets under the AJISS program. The role involves multidisciplinary collaboration to design, modify, and document marine mechanical systems with emphasis on propulsion, hydraulics, HVAC, and related systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or systems engineering or equivalent education with relevant experience.
  • Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering principles and lifecycle processes.
  • Familiarity with mechanical design and drafting tools such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Working towards obtaining P. Eng license.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Secret security clearance.
  • English language proficiency.

This is a hybrid role in Halifax, NS Canada. Note the role can be hired in Ottawa ON or Victoria BC. Position Summary Thales Canada is seeking a Junior Mechanical Engineer to support the Engineering Change Program for the Royal Canadian Navy's Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) and Joint Support Ship (JSS) fleets under the AJISS program.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary Engineering Change Team, the successful candidate will support intermediate and senior engineers in the assessment, design, implementation, and documentation of modifications to shipboard mechanical systems. Responsibilities will include engineering work related to propulsion, maneuvering, bilge, ballast, hydraulic, pneumatic, HVAC, and auxiliary systems. Through mentorship and practical experience, the candidate will develop skills in mechanical design, engineering analysis, technical investigations, and engineering change management while contributing to safe, reliable, and maintainable solutions that meet customer, quality, schedule, and cost objectives.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The Junior Mechanical Engineer may assist engineers with some or all of the following:

  • Support the implementation and coordination of engineering changes and engineering work packages under the guidance of intermediate and senior engineers;
  • Conduct technical investigations into problems associated with marine equipment and/or system malfunction, including failure and root cause analysis, risk assessments, and solution development;
  • Assist with the development, traceability, verification, and validation of engineering requirements throughout the engineering change lifecycle;
  • Conduct Options Analysis;
  • Development and review of Engineering plans, processes and procedures;
  • Manage or support the preparation and updating of marine system technical documentation including manufacturing drawings, design and materiel specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, and test and trials documentation;
  • Prepare documented work scopes suitable for solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEM’s, manufacturers, suppliers, repair and testing facilities, or specialist service providers;
  • Support the development of technical proposals, schedule estimates, and cost estimates for customer approval;
  • Perform engineering calculations and support design reviews for piping, hydraulic, HVAC, pneumatic, structural, and mechanical systems; and
  • Support onboard surveys, testing, trials, and verification activities to confirm engineering solutions meet operational and technical requirements.

To provide products and customer solutions in consistency with all stakeholders’ needs and entity policies, as well as continuously enhance engineering competitiveness.

Basic Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or systems engineering disciplines or equivalent education with relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with manufacturing methods and processes
  • Experience in ship design, build, operation and maintenance
  • Exposure to naval or marine engineering systems and associated standards and regulations, including IMO, SOLAS, Class Society Rules, IEC standards, and Transport Canada regulations
  • Awareness of shipbuilding and naval engineering considerations such as shock, vibration, EMC/EMI, drawing standards, and industry design practices
  • Familiarity with configuration management principles and engineering change processes
  • Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools such as Windchill
  • Experience reviewing technical drawings, specifications, and bills of material
  • Experience with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Jira, and Confluence
Physical Demands

Office / Desk work: > 90%, with periodic inspections and field work in the lab or shipyard if It is necessary

Regulatory Compliance Requirements
