WOMEN IN CRISIS (ALGOMA) INC.

Invites applications for the position of

Junior Lawyer (Full-Time Contract Until March 31, 2027)

Reporting to the Community Services Supervisor and the Executive Directors, the Staff Lawyer will provide a range of legal services for survivors of gender-based violence as they move through the family court process.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide a wide range of legal and legal support services to women with family law issues, including full representation, unbundled legal services, legal coaching, summary legal advice, assistance with court applications, affidavits, and legal documentation, court accompaniment and referrals.
  • Assist with Legal Aid applications and communication
  • Build relationships with community-based family law lawyers,courts, and community agencies.
  • Maintain current legal knowledge and accurate records
  • Provide mentorship and support to other project staff and volunteers
  • Other tasks as appropriate as the project develops

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Monday to Friday 8:30AM to 5:00PM with one unpaid hour for lunch, with flexibility to accommodate evening groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills:

  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • One year of work experience as a family law lawyer or other relevant experience
  • Familiarity with Ontario family law legislation and case law, including theDivorce Act, theChildren’s Law Reform Act, theFamily Law Act, theFamily Law Rulesand evolving Provincial, Regional, and local Practice Directions
  • Basic understanding of gender-based violence
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good organizational and research skills
  • Demonstrated written and oral advocacy skills
  • Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Clear criminal record check
