The Junior Hydrologic Engineer is involved with the development and application of hydrologic models for flood forecasting while also contributing to the efficient day-to-day operation of the Forecast Centre through various tasks such as data processing and GIS analysis.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Member-in-Training with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba, and not already enrolled in Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Engineer-in-Training Program
  • Must be able to work overtime, including weekends and be able to be away from home for extended periods
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor rough terrain environment and be exposed to notable hazards such as construction equipment, roadway traffic, noise, dust, hand/power tools, insects, vegetation, & sharp objects
  • Working extended hours and weekends as needed
  • Must be able to travel frequently to work sites within the province by ground and/or air transportation
Qualifications
Essential
  • Experience in hydrologic analysis, modelling and forecasting
  • Experience in hydro-meteorological data analysis, ArcGIS tools, and computer programming
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts
  • Effective written communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical and non-technical correspondence and reports
  • Ability to learn and work with appropriate industry software tools to successfully complete assignments/projects
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Knowledge of Workplace Safety and Health work practices
Desired
  • Knowledge of basic principles of hydraulics, hydraulic modeling, and reservoir routing techniques
Duties
  • Development and application of hydrologic models for flood forecasting
  • Assists in the daily preparation of hydrometric and climatological data for numerous watersheds in Manitoba
  • GIS mapping exercises including spatial precipitation analysis and model pre-processing
  • Assists in the preparation of flood outlooks, flood sheets and other flood-related reports
  • Assists in responding to daily information requests received at the Forecast Centre
  • Aids the other Engineers in the group with various day-to-day tasks such as data processing/analysis
