Job summary

Thurber Engineering Ltd. in Calgary invites applications for a Junior Geotechnical or Geological Engineer to join our team. This entry-level role combines field and office work on diverse projects, with mentorship from our senior engineers.

You will assist with field inspections, borehole logging, soil and rock testing, and design tasks while developing technical report writing and project coordination skills. New grads welcome; eligibility for APEGA/EGBC is preferred.

Qualifications

• Post-graduate degree in a geo-engineering discipline.
• 0–5 years of experience; new grads welcome.
• Eligible for APEGA and/or EGBC.
• Willingness to drive to field sites.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and manage geotechnical projects to meet client needs while maintaining safety and quality standards.
• Coordinate field inspections of construction works and material testing.
• Plan field programs for geotechnical/environmental assessments including boreholes and logging.
• Oversee installation and monitoring of geotechnical instrumentation.
• Undertake analysis and design tasks, summarize data, and produce reports.
• Collaborate on proposals and technical reports.
• Manage task scope, schedule, and budgets.

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Junior Geotechnical / Geological Engineer to join our team in Calgary, Alberta.

Thurber is a specialized consulting firm with a focus on geotechnical engineering. Our project work includes transportation, large and small infrastructure, natural hazards, development and more. We undertake challenging assignments that can include steep terrain, deep foundations, compressible soils, landslides, contamination, or other complications.

As our Engineer, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and manage a wide variety of geotechnical projects to meet our client’s needs as well as maintain Thurber’s safety and quality standards.
• Coordinate and carry out field inspection of construction works and material testing of geotechnical materials.
• Coordinating and executing field programs for geotechnical/environmental assessments for infrastructure, foundation design, natural hazards, pipeline routing, etc. Will involve drilling geotechnical boreholes and logging of soils and rock.
• Overseeing installation of geotechnical instrumentation as well as routine monitoring of instrumentation.
• Undertake analysis and design tasks, summarize, review, and interpret laboratory data.
• Prepare and write proposals and technical reports.
• Manage assigned task scope, schedule, and budgets.

Qualifications and Assets

• Post-graduate degree in a geo-engineering discipline such as Civil Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Engineering Geology.
• Between 0-5 years of experience. New Grads welcome to apply.
• Comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments.
• Comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites.
• Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required; and,
• Eligible for membership with APEGA and/or EGBC.
• Graduate Degree (Masters or higher).
• Experience with various geotechnical software such as SlopeW, SeepW, Flac, Soilvision, etc.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing).

This is a junior level career position and will be comprised of field and office based responsibilities, with opportunities for continued career growth within the company.
