Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Junior Geotechnical Field and Laboratory Technician to join our team in Victoria, British Columbia.
Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental, and construction materials engineering and testing services across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to solve problems related to earth, the environment, and construction materials in various industries, including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine, and environmental services.
As a Junior Geotechnical Field and Laboratory Technician, you will work on diverse projects, developing your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.
Responsibilities
- Conduct field inspections and monitoring during construction projects to ensure compliance with geotechnical specifications and standards;
- Perform in situ testing of materials on construction sites, including compaction testing and testing of concrete and asphalt;
- Carry out laboratory tests within our soils, concrete, and asphalt laboratories;
- Maintain laboratory equipment according to specifications;
- Keep an organized environment, including soil inventory and equipment management, within a team of laboratory and field specialists;
- Collaborate with engineers and team members to provide technical support;
- Maintain accurate records of testing activities; and,
- Uphold workplace health and safety practices.
Qualifications
- Valid Class 5 Driver's license with an acceptable driving record;
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and perform fieldwork in all weather conditions;
- Willingness to work in both field and office environments, including remote construction sites;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;
- Highly organized with a flexible approach to work assignments;
- Comfortable with variability in daily tasks.
Assets
- Technician or technologist diploma from a recognized college;
- Experience with soil laboratory testing procedures such as Proctor Tests and grain size analyses;
- Knowledge of ASTM and CSA Standards;
- CCIL and CSA Certification for soils, concrete, and asphalt is an asset.
Base Salary Range
- $53,000 – $65,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week;
- The posted range reflects experience and qualifications;
- Salary may be adjusted upward for highly qualified candidates;
- Less experienced candidates may start at a reduced wage.
