The Opportunity
McElhanney is seeking a motivated Junior Geotechnical Engineer or Technologist to join our growing Geotechnical team in Kamloops, BC. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a wide range of dynamic projects while developing technical expertise and laying the groundwork for a successful career in geotechnical engineering.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with experienced engineers and be involved in geotechnical investigations, analysis, and design for transportation, land development, municipal, and resource-based projects. This position is well-suited for someone who enjoys fieldwork, thrives in a hands-on environment, and is eager to learn.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Assist with geotechnical investigations and studies, including conducting field tests, interpreting results, and documenting findings. A significant portion of this role (up to 70%) will involve on-site field work, including traveling between project sites, performing sampling, logging boreholes, installing instrumentation, etc.
- Support geotechnical analysis and design on a variety of projects, including foundations, slope stability, and soil behavior
- Assist in the preparation of geotechnical reports with recommendations for clients
- Coordinate fieldwork including safety assessments, subcontractor coordination, and data collection
- Support the senior team members in day-to-day activities, including client communication, project management, and proposal preparation
- Work with multidisciplinary teams from other divisions like Structural, Civil, and Environmental
What You’ll Bring
- A two-year post-secondary diploma in Applied Science or Civil Engineering Technology, with an interest in geotechnical engineering or bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical emphasis, Geotechnical Engineering, or Geological Engineering
- Registered or eligible to immediately register as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or AScT in British Columbia
- 0-2 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering or a closely related field
- Interest in geotechnical engineering design, analysis, and consulting with an eagerness to learn and grow within the field
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and Autodesk Civil3D is an asset
- Knowledge of geotechnical software (e.g., GeoStudio, RocScience, etc.) is an asset
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to prepare reports and liaise with clients and colleagues
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with a keen attention to detail and a passion for learning
What Can We Offer You?
The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $90,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
