Job summary

Govan Brown is seeking a motivated Junior Estimator to join our Calgary team. You will assist with estimating, reviewing drawings, obtaining quotations, and supporting tendering and bidding for ICI and interior renovation projects.

This role offers growth in construction estimating, applying analytical skills and knowledge of methods and materials. On-site work in Calgary with potential travel and a strong emphasis on safety.

Qualifications

• Experience reading drawings and specifications to prepare accurate takeoffs.
• Ability to assist in budgeting, subcontractor solicitation and bid analysis.
• Familiarity with pre-construction processes and value engineering.
• Knowledge of construction methods in ICI ground-up and interior renovation projects.

Responsibilities

• Assist with estimating and pre-construction activities, bid analysis, and subcontract buyout.
• Collaborate with project managers on budgeting, general conditions, and project strategy.
• Identify qualified subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive pricing.
• Review tender drawings/specifications and prepare quantity takeoffs under supervision.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities and constructability issues in plans.

OUR OPPORTUNITY

Govan Brown is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Estimator to join our growing Calgary team. In this role, you will assist with all estimating activities including preparing accurate cost estimates, reviewing drawings and specifications, obtaining and comparing quotations, and supporting the tendering and bidding process. This position offers an excellent opportunity to grow your career in construction estimating while applying your analytical abilities, knowledge of construction methods and materials, and proven experience in both ICI ground-up construction and interior renovation/fit-out projects to produce competitive proposals that drive our ongoing success.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Assist with all aspects of the estimating and pre-construction process, including estimate preparation, subcontractor solicitation, bid analysis, and supporting subcontract buyout and contracting.
• Work closely with project managers and business development to assist with project budgeting, general conditions, and overall project strategy.
• Assist in identifying and soliciting qualified subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive pricing for tenders.
• Review tender drawings, specifications, and project documents and prepare accurate quantity takeoffs under the guidance of senior estimating staff.
• Review the project plans and specifications to identify potential cost-saving opportunities, scheduling considerations, and constructability issues.
• Participate in pre-construction activities, including meetings, budget preparation, value engineering exercises, and other estimating-related tasks.

WHAT YOU BRING

• Post Secondary education in Construction Management, Architectural Studies or related area of study.
• 2+ years related work experience in ground up and commercial interior construction estimating at a general contracting environment.
• Knowledge of construction management, lump sum and design build contracts
• Strong relationship building skills or existing relationships with local sub-trades and knowledge of local market conditions
• Ability to pull apart drawings and technical specs with a solid understanding of trade scope of work
• Relationship savvy and interpersonal skills to demand the respect of all stakeholders
• Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines
• Proficiency in productivity, construction management and estimating software like On-Screen Takeoff (OST), Bluebeam, Building Connected, Microsoft Office suite.
• Proactive with a “get ‘er done” attitude.

YOUR WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

• Office location is 215 9th Avenue SW, Calgary with potential for work-related travel.
• On-site and in-office. This is not a hybrid or remote role.
• Potential exposure to construction work site environment in all seasons.
