The Role

We’re looking for a self-directed, passionate, and curious junior data scientist interested in working with geospatial and earth science data to support BGC's technical teams and clients. You will join our small but rapidly growing data science team—comprised of data scientists, analysts, statisticians, geoscientists, and engineers—specialized in delivering innovative products in the earth observation and applied geoscience space. As a key member, you will apply your unique knowledge of geoscience, geography, and data science to tackle some of the most complex applied earth science challenges globally—exploring new & novel ways to analyze geospatial data at scale.

This position can be located at any BGC office in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Build data pipelines to clean, aggregate, and prepare large geospatial and earth science datasets for analysis and modeling
  • Develop prototype analyses, visualizations, and dashboards to extract insights from complex datasets
  • Conduct statistical analyses and assist in building and training machine learning models on large earth science datasets
  • Collaborate with the Cambio Earth team, participate in Agile workflows, and help implement models into their enterprise software
  • Act as a data science resource for BGC’s geoscience and engineering teams, supporting their work on complex earth science challenges
  • Contribute to internal networking, proposal writing, and technical report preparation
  • Stay current with advancements in geospatial data science technologies and best practices in data science

Required Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences, Engineering (Civil, Geological, Geotechnical), Physical Geography, or other related field
  • Additional education, work experience, or research experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or Geomatics
  • 0-2years of related industry experience
  • Proficiency in geospatial and time series data analysis and visualization
  • Fluent in Python and/or R
  • Familiarity with building and training machine learning models on geospatial data
  • Previous exposure to remote sensing data (e.g. satellite imagery, InSAR, Lidar, or drone data)
  • Experience working collaboratively using version control platforms such as GitHub or Azure DevOps

Desired Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training or Geoscientist-in-Training
  • Experience working with desktop GIS systems (QGIS, ArcGIS, etc.) and with geospatial programming
  • Experience in SQL and knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server)
  • Interest or experience in big data engineering, particularly geospatial datasets
  • Knowledge of cloud architecture and tooling

Position Requirements

Drug & Alcohol Testing

The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee’s first week or in the future, as required. Driver’s License

BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck. Upon hiring, BGCwill requirea driver’s abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $80,000-$95,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. BGC's compensation package also includes a training allowance and a comprehensive medical and dental plan.
