Job description

The Junior Radiation Surveyor will provide technical Radiation Safety advice in support of Nordion’s activities in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission regulations and Nordion’s site license. They will carry out or monitor radiation safety procedures and processes to provide a safe working environment. They are expected to carry out all on site aspects of the Radiation Surveyor duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides radiation safety advice to all operation personnel, performs radiation and contamination surveys as requested and assures that Radiation Safety Procedures are practiced.
  • Performs Transport Index measurements on all outgoing shipments.
  • Conducts in house and external environmental monitoring including liquid and stack releases.
  • May be sent off-site to provide assistance during radiological surveys, decontamination, and investigation of radiation incidents.
  • Will learn to operate MCA and be able to identify unknown contaminants.
  • Will learn to perform HEPA and charcoal filter testing.
  • Support Nordion’s Emergency Response program with respect to radiation safety support.

Qualifications

Normally Post-Secondary School Graduate (3 years) in a Science discipline plus 1-3 years relevant technical experience. Experience in a health & safety technical role is considered an asset.

Skills and Competencies

  • Must perform clear, concise communication with all levels of staff including Managers, technicians, contractors, and visitors.
  • Knowledge of radioactivity and radiation protection a definite asset.
  • Must have knowledge of basic chemistry.
  • Must be skilled in physics and mathematics to calculate radioactivity concentrations and radiation levels in all situations.
  • Must be able to inspire confidence, communicate clearly, work harmoniously with others and remain calm and objective in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to operate and interpret electronic instrumentation and assemble basic monitoring systems.

Additional Requirements

  • Required to wear a respirator, including SCBA gear.
  • May be required to work under unusual conditions of high airborne or loose contamination or elevated radiation fields.
  • Will escort first responders in the event of an emergency in the active area.
  • Expected to work overtime.
  • May be called during off hours to investigate a radiation alarm.

Training Required : Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker.
