Job summary

Valard Construction in Ottawa, ON is seeking Journeyperson Powerline Technicians to join our distribution team on local projects. This hands-on role focuses on constructing overhead and underground distribution systems while upholding safety and quality.

You will mentor apprentices, perform energized work, and coordinate with the foreman to ensure timely, compliant delivery. Union employment and CUSW membership are required; a valid 434A/Red Seal and a clean driving record are essential.

Qualifications

• Journeyperson Powerline Technician with 434A/Red Seal certification.
• Experience in utility construction and power distribution.
• Experience with energized work, system switching, and UG installations.
• Valid driver''s license and acceptable driving record.
• Confined Space, UWPC, Working at Heights and First Aid certifications preferred.
• Unionized worksite and membership in CUSW required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain steel/wood poles, towers, and guy wires.
• Install overhead and underground power lines, insulators, conductors, transformers, switches and related equipment.
• Perform conductor stringing, sagging, clipping, and dead-ending (energized and de-energized).
• Execute advanced system switching tasks, including reclosers and loop feeds.
• Perform UG cable testing, terminations, and equipment installation.
• Mentor apprentices and junior personnel in tasks, safety protocols, and equipment use.
• Proficiently carry out live line work procedures and teach basics to apprentices.
• Lead job hazard assessments and fall protection plans.

Job description

Our Distribution group is currently seeking Journeyperson Powerline Technicians (PLT) to join our growing team, in the Ottawa, ON area.

Reporting to the Construction Foreman, PLT's are responsible for construction of overhead and underground electrical power distribution systems. This is a hands‑on role where your technical ability and commitment to safety will directly support our operations and team culture.

Please Note: Candidates must reside locally or within a reasonable commuting distance. These projects will be for unionized worksites. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW).

Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain steel / wood poles, towers, and guy wires
• Install overhead and underground power lines, insulators, conductors, transformers, switches, and associated equipment
• Perform conductor stringing, sagging, clipping, and dead-ending (energized and de-energized)
• Execute advanced system switching tasks, including reclosers and loop feeds
• Perform UG (underground) cable testing, terminations, and equipment installation
• Splice, solder, and insulate conductors for connections
• Model safe work practices and ensure crew adherence to Valard's HSE policies
• Mentor apprentices and junior personnel in tasks, safety protocols, and equipment use
• Proficiently carry out advanced live line work procedures and teach basic live line procedures to apprentices
• Lead or assist with job hazard assessments, fall protection plans, and critical lift plans
• Ensure proper documentation of safety forms, inspections, and procedural compliance
• Submit daily documentation and reports

Requirements

• Journeyperson Powerline Technician (434A or Red Seal)
• Demonstrated experience in the utility construction sector
• Direct power distribution experience
• Demonstrated experience in energized work, system switching, and UG installations
• Class 4 Rubber Glove experience
• Understanding of construction and maintenance practices for distribution systems
• Ability to read construction prints and electrical schematics
• Valid Drivers Licence with ability to provide an acceptable Drivers Abstract (Preference for Commercial Drivers Licence)
• Preference for Confined Space Certificate, UWPC, Working at Heights Cert, First Aid (CPR/AED)

Benefits

This position offers an hourly rate of $45.04 - $67.56 / hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
