Job summary

Valard Construction in Kitchener/Waterloo, ON is seeking Journeyperson Powerline Technicians (434A or Red Seal) for unionized, field-based distribution projects. Reporting to the Construction Foreman, you will construct overhead and underground power systems and mentor apprentices.

The role requires experience in energized work, system switching, and UG installations, plus a valid driver’s license. Union affiliation with CUSW is expected.

Qualifications

• Journeyperson Powerline Technician (434A or Red Seal) or equivalent certification.
• Demonstrated experience in the utility construction sector.
• Direct power distribution experience.
• Experience with energized work, system switching, and UG installations.
• Class 4 Rubber Glove experience.
• Understanding of construction and maintenance for distribution systems.
• Ability to read construction prints and electrical schematics.
• Valid Driver’s Licence with ability to provide a Drivers Abstract (Commercial licence preferred).
• Preferred Confined Space, UWPC, Working at Heights, First Aid (CPR/AED).

Responsibilities

• Maintain steel/wood poles, towers, and guy wires.
• Install overhead and underground power lines, insulators, conductors, transformers, switches, and related equipment.
• Perform conductor stringing, sagging, clipping, and dead-ending (energized and de-energized).
• Execute system switching tasks including reclosers and loop feeds.
• Underground cable testing, terminations, and equipment installation.
• Splice, solder, and insulate conductors for connections.
• Support safety through HSE compliance and safe work practices.
• Mentor apprentices and junior personnel in tasks and safety.
• Lead or assist with hazard assessments and fall protection plans.
• Ensure proper safety documentation and reporting.

Job description

Our Distribution group is currently seeking Journeyperson Powerline Technicians (PLT) to join our growing team, in the Kitchener / Waterloo, ON area.

Reporting to the Construction Foreman, PLT's are responsible for construction of overhead and underground electrical power distribution systems. This is a hands-on role where your technical ability and commitment to safety will directly support our operations and team culture.

Please Note: Candidates must reside locally or within a reasonable commuting distance. These projects will be for unionized worksites. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW).

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintain steel / wood poles, towers, and guy wires
• Install overhead and underground power lines, insulators, conductors, transformers, switches, and associated equipment
• Perform conductor stringing, sagging, clipping, and dead-ending (energized and de-energized)
• Execute advanced system switching tasks, including reclosers and loop feeds
• Perform UG (underground) cable testing, terminations, and equipment installation
• Splice, solder, and insulate conductors for connections
• Model safe work practices and ensure crew adherence to Valard’s HSE policies
• Mentor apprentices and junior personnel in tasks, safety protocols, and equipment use
• Proficiently carry out advanced live line work procedures and teach basic live line procedures to apprentices
• Lead or assist with job hazard assessments, fall protection plans, and critical lift plans
• Ensure proper documentation of safety forms, inspections, and procedural compliance
• Submit daily documentation and reports

This project will be a unionized worksite. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW)

This position offers an hourly rate of $45.04 - $67.56 / hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
