Job summary

Valard Construction is seeking Journeyperson Powerline Technicians (PLT) to join our group in the Kitchener/Waterloo area. This hands-on role focuses on overhead and underground power distribution, with emphasis on safety and high-quality workmanship.

Applicants must be union-ready and able to join the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW). Local residency or commuting distance is required; valid drivers license and relevant certifications preferred.

Qualifications

• Journeyperson Powerline Technician (434A or Red Seal) certification is required.
• Experience in utility construction and direct power distribution work.
• Experience with energized work, system switching, and UG installations.
• Class 4 Rubber Glove certification is preferred.
• Ability to read construction prints and electrical schematics.

Responsibilities

• Maintain poles, towers, guy wires; install overhead/underground lines.
• Perform conductor stringing, sagging, clipping, and dead-ending on energised/de-energised lines.
• Execute live line work procedures and mentor apprentices.
• Lead job hazard assessments and safety plans; document inspections and reports.
• Ensure compliance with HSE policies and proper documentation.

Job description

Our Distribution group is currently seeking Journeyperson Powerline Technicians (PLT) to join our growing team, in the Kitchener / Waterloo, ON area.

Reporting to the Construction Foreman, PLT's are responsible for construction of overhead and underground electrical power distribution systems. This is a hands-on role where your technical ability and commitment to safety will directly support our operations and team culture.

Please Note: Candidates must reside locally or within a reasonable commuting distance. These projects will be for unionized worksites. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW).

Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain steel / wood poles, towers, and guy wires
• Install overhead and underground power lines, insulators, conductors, transformers, switches, and associated equipment
• Perform conductor stringing, sagging, clipping, and dead‑ending (energized and de‑energized)
• Execute advanced system switching tasks, including reclosers and loop feeds
• Perform UG (underground) cable testing, terminations, and equipment installation
• Splice, solder, and insulate conductors for connections
• Model safe work practices and ensure crew adherence to Valard's HSE policies
• Mentor apprentices and junior personnel in tasks, safety protocols, and equipment use
• Proficiently carry out advanced live line work procedures and teach basic live line procedures to apprentices
• Lead or assist with job hazard assessments, fall protection plans, and critical lift plans
• Ensure proper documentation of safety forms, inspections, and procedural compliance
• Submit daily documentation and reports

• Journeyperson Powerline Technician (434A or Red Seal)
• Demonstrated experience in the utility construction sector
• Direct power distribution experience
• Demonstrated experience in energized work, system switching, and UG installations
• Class 4 Rubber Glove experience
• Understanding of construction and maintenance practices for distribution systems
• Ability to read construction prints and electrical schematics
• Valid Drivers Licence with ability to provide an acceptable Drivers Abstract (Preference for Commercial Drivers Licence)
• Preference for Confined Space Certificate, UWPC, Working at Heights Cert, First Aid (CPR/AED)

This position offers an hourly rate of $45.04 - $67.56 / hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
