The Automotive Body Repair person provides work and repair on body and chassis of all types of City of Vancouver motor vehicles and equipment. The successful candidate must be able to work 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday to Friday, and may be required to adjust shifts as operationally required.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Repairs and replaces front end, body, doors and frame, and underbody components of COV motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Operates soldering/MIG/TIG equipment or uses plastic filler to fill holes, dents and seams.
  • Removes damaged fenders, panels and grills using common wrenches and hand tools, cutting torches, and bolt or weld replacement parts into place as necessary.
  • Prepares and repaints auto body surfaces.
  • Performs aluminum body and other repairs, including shrinking, grinding & welding.
  • Performs fiberglass repairs on commercial trucks.
  • Repairs and replaces glass components (e.g., windshields, windows, sunroofs) and interior components (e.g., seat frame assemblies, carpets, floorboard insulation).
  • Inspects and test drives repaired vehicles to ensure they are safe to operate.
  • Orders parts and materials.
  • Installs graphics and decals.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 10, supplemented by technical courses related to the responsibilities.
  • Some flat rate work experience and know how to read an Autadex estimate and follow the estimate.
  • Auto Body and Collision Technician Red Seal certificate.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the autobody work trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of paint, lacquer, enamel mixing and colour matching.
  • Considerable knowledge of the working parts of vehicle windows, doors and locks.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions.
  • Proven effective verbal and written skills to communicate clearly and concisely with superiors, management, colleagues, and with other employees in other departments.
  • Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to juggle changing priorities within competing deadlines.
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to perform simple administrative tasks.
  • Ability to plan, assign, review and supervise the work of one or more subordinates.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new methods and techniques.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Skilled in the use and care of COV tooling and property, and personal tools and equipment employed in the trade.
  • Agility, muscular coordination and sufficient strength to permit the performance of heavy manual labour.

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or higher and a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record:
    • No more than 2 infractions in 2 years or no more than 4 points in 2 consecutive years.
    • 3 years accumulation of no more than 2 preventable work-related driving or equipment operating accidents in any single year.
    • Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail.
