Job Title: Journeyman Welder
Department: Project Execution
Reporting to: Fabrication Supervisor / Site Supervisor
Job Purpose and Objectives
The Journeyman Welder at Bothar is responsible for the maintenance, servicing, and repair of all equipment used by the company. During projects, this position is a part of the operations team who are responsible for the safe, technical, and economical execution of the company’s projects in the field.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Welding, fabricating, fit-up, layout.
- Being proficient in GMAW, FCAW, SMAW.
- Read and interpret blueprints and fabrication drawings.
- Fabrication, air arcing, grinding, and use of cutting torch.
- Operate hand tools and power tools safely and with skill.
- Welding to repair equipment and parts used in direct pipe, micro-tunnelling, auger boring, and other Bothar related services.
- Participate in tailgate and operations meetings, as well as regular safety inspections, including FLHA’s. Reviews of SOP’s, JSA’s, and Work Site Observations.
- Ensure applicable HSE standards set by the client and the company are followed and executed.
- Assist in the training of Apprentice Welders.
- Performs routine maintenance on welding equipment and maintains inventory on welding consumables being utilized and reporting to Fabrication Supervisor.
- Assist other team members in day-to-day shop or project activities.
Key Technical Skills and Knowledge
- Understand various welding practices and methods, and determine most suitable method for the task at hand (including air arcing, grinding, and cutting).
- Previous experience with fabrication is a must.
- Ability to check for defects and shape component parts, using a cutting torch.
- Read and understand schematics, plans, and instructions to determine weld procedures.
- Ability to visualize a layout by looking at plans and prints.
- Use of logic and various methods to solve difficult problems with effective and creative solutions.
- Basic computer skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Site Docs experience is an asset.

Physical Demand
- While performing the duties of this job, requirements include prolonged standing, walking and/or sitting.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Manual dexterity required to handle/feel objects, tools, and controls.
- Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions, inside and outside.
- Capability to work in confined spaces is required.
- Working day and night shifts including holidays.
- Pass pre-employment physical.
Qualifications
- Education – Welder Red Seal Journeyman certification.
- Experience – Minimum 4 years of experience in Welding works.
- Relevant work experience with Microtunnel Boring Machines and trenchless technology is an asset.
- Pressure pipe welding experience is an asset.
- Certification - CWB certification would be an asset.
- The following safety tickets are an asset: (Bothar may assist with any missing tickets required to be on-site) WHIMIS, First Aid, CSTS or PCST, Confined Space Entry and Rescue, Fall Arrest / Fall Protection, H2S alive.
Other Relevant Information
This position is assigned to the Calgary Yard, and to field locations during operations. Hours of work may vary, including night shifts based on project schedules. Must be eligible to work in Canada. Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol clearance is required. Must be fluent in English (written and spoken).
