Position Details
The University of Lethbridge is seeking a skilled Painter to join our Facilities team. This senior-level technician role is responsible for surface repair, renewal, and maintenance of wood, metal, masonry, and drywall throughout campus buildings. The Painter will lead the Preventative Maintenance Program and supervise a team of up to five casual staff during the summer months.
Key Responsibilities
- Demand Maintenance Work (35%): Perform drywall repair, wood staining, metal refinishing, and specialized coatings for various surfaces.
- Preventative Maintenance Program (35%): Develop and execute a 4-year maintenance plan to uphold campus aesthetic and safety standards.
- Supervision (10%): Train and oversee casual staff during summer maintenance projects.
- Inventory Management (10%): Monitor and order painting supplies, ensuring materials align with project needs.
- Hazardous Materials Remediation (5%): Conduct low-risk asbestos and mould abatements, following university safety protocols.
- Project Commissioning (5%): Ensure contractor work aligns with Master Painter Index (MPI) standards and university expectations.
Working Conditions
- Requires lifting (10-50+ lbs), overhead work, and repetitive motion.
- Exposure to dust, chemical vapors, mould, and asbestos, requiring adherence to safety protocols.
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors, including inclement weather conditions.
- Protective gear such as respirators, gloves, and hearing protection may be required.

Position Qualifications
Qualifications & Requirements
- Journeyman Painter Certificate.
- Minimum 2-4 years (preferred: 4-7 years) in a similar role.
- Certifications: Fall Protection, Aerial Work Platform (considered an asset) training will be provided.
Mandatory
- Personal Fall Protection.
- Mobile Elevating Work Platform.
- WHMIS.
- Standard First Aid & CPR C + AED.
- Certified Asbestos Worker.
Preferred
- Additional safety and hazardous material handling certifications.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in drywall installation and repair, wood/metal refinishing, and use of compressed air & airless paint sprayers.
- Strong attention to detail, dexterity, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with safety procedures related to hazardous materials.
Note: The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and is required to have a valid unrestricted Class 5 Driver’s License with no more than 6 demerits and submission of a motor vehicle record (driver abstract) dated within 3 months of the posting close is required.
