Overview
Our Substation group is currently looking to add a Journeyman Electrician to our growing team. Reporting to the Substation Construction Foreman, the role of Substation Construction Electrician is to perform site construction activities individually or with small, dedicated workgroups. In this role the Journeyman Electrician is expected to lead and participate in the construction of medium and high voltage electrical systems within a substation while ensuring project construction is executed effectively and safely. They are also responsible to identify any potential changes or field issues as they arise and bring to the Foreman’s attention and will work with the Foreman to identify timelines for work activities as well as notify when the work fronts have been completed.
Please Note: This is a field-based position working an 8 day on / 6 day off rotation that can be based from Winnipeg, MB or Thunder Bay, ON. LOA is provided.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Lead and participate in the construction of medium and high voltage electrical systems
- Perform substation steel erection, cable tray building, and cable trench, bus, HV equipment and steel structure installation proficiently
- Oversee the installation and commissioning of medium and high voltage transformers, switchgear, and associated equipment
- Proficiently handle cable installation for medium and high voltage power distribution systems
- Proficiently terminate medium and high voltage cables, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards
- Interpret medium and high voltage electrical blueprints, schematics, and diagrams for planning and executing installations and terminations in construction projects
- Manage material deliveries and inventorying of materials as per the assigned work fronts, identifying any potential risks and bringing to the Site Supervisors and Foreman’s attention
- Ensure that the crew supports Valard Quality Management requirements
- Ensure that Valard’s equipment and tools are used in a safe and professional manner; tools are accounted for daily; any defective tools and equipment are tagged out of service and brought to the Foreman’s attention
- Work with Site Supervisor and Foreman to understand the full scope of the project to identify changes in scope and address with the Foreman immediately
- Must be able to effectively manage small work groups
- Maintain daily diary for record keeping purposes
- Comply with Valard’s Safety Policies and Procedures and work with new hire employees to ensure they understand and adhere to Valard’s safety policies and procedures
- Address crew issues/conflicts with Site Foreman as they arise
- Work with on-site Safety Advisor to address any safety concerns brought forth by crews and/or Client
Requirements
- 4 years of experience in the construction industry
- Journeyman Electrician (Red Seal) certification
- Knowledge of various construction disciplines, safety regulations, and understanding of quality control
- Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend blueprints and an understanding of SCADA systems
- Comprehension of pertinent basic EB & G Principles and lock out tag out procedures
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Demonstrated ability to manage small-sized work groups safely and efficiently
Preferred Skills / Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise in medium and high voltage electrical systems (particularly in construction settings) and cable terminations
- Experience in medium-to-high-voltage substation construction
