The Division

The Palliser School Division is a public-school jurisdiction located in southern Alberta. Palliser’s geographical area stretches from Coaldale to Calgary, Alberta. For the 2024-2025 school year, the Division currently has approximately 9,400 students. Palliser serves students in ECS through Grade 12 in 14 community schools; 11 faith-based alternative schools, ten of which are in Calgary on nine separate campuses; one sports-based alternative school, four alternative programs for Low German-speaking Mennonite families; 17 Hutterian colony schools; homeschooling, online and international programs. Palliser employs approximately 1,400 staff members in full-time, part-time and casual positions.

The Opportunity

Palliser School Division is seeking a Journeyman Electrician to join our dedicated Facilities team. Reporting directly to the Facilities Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electrical systems across our diverse portfolio of schools and facilities. This is a 12-month position offering a consistent, year-round work schedule and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on our educational community.

What You Will Do

As our Journeyman Electrician, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Performing comprehensive electrical maintenance and repairs in school buildings, encompassing both commercial and industrial systems.
  2. Troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems integral to HVAC, lighting controls, heating/cooling automation, refrigeration systems, boilers, and other critical building equipment.
  3. Installing and maintaining Delta Controls for HVAC and lighting control systems, including associated computer software.
  4. Engaging in electrical design and repair work, including printed circuit board (PCB) repairs.
  5. Supporting the installation and programming of security systems, such as button readers.
  6. Contributing to electricity conservation planning and implementing energy-saving measures across the division.
  7. Collaborating effectively with maintenance staff and school administration to ensure the safe and timely completion of electrical tasks.
  8. Responding promptly and efficiently to emergency repair requests.
  9. Identifying and reporting hazards, safety concerns, or issues directly to the Facilities Manager.
  10. Maintaining accurate records of all work completed, including detailed reports on maintenance activities and system upgrades.
  11. Repairing, installing, servicing, and maintaining a wide range of electrical systems, including interior and exterior conduit, lighting and power circuits, motors, control equipment, bell, clock, and alarm systems, power equipment and tools, and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and systems.
  12. Repairing or replacing defective components such as controls, thermostats, automatic switches, damper motors, relays, filters, belts, and safety valves.
  13. Installing and repairing control and distribution apparatus, including motors, relays, switches, thermostats, and circuit-breaker panels.
  14. Maintaining and repairing all electrical, chemical, and mechanical elements of HVAC units.
  15. Diagnosing and resolving complex problems in electrical circuits, systems, and equipment using various testing instruments and equipment.
  16. Inspecting electrical equipment and installations to ensure compliance with relevant safety standards and codes.
  17. Programming automated control systems and diagnosing electrical failures in Division equipment and systems to plan effective repairs.
  18. Operating the computer-controlled building management system.
  19. Demonstrating skill in the planning and coordination of work projects.
  20. Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine material requirements, report on work progress, and propose necessary changes in plans and specifications.
