Job summary

Grindstone Theatre in Edmonton is seeking a Costume/Props Designer to bring the vision of Die Harsh: A Christmas Musical to life. You will collaborate with the Director to create a minimal, flexible set of costumes and props suitable for an improv-style production and manage fittings and rehearsals.

The role requires prior Costume/Props design experience, strong budgeting skills, and the ability to work with tight timelines. Submissions are online with a deadline of November 18, 2022.

• Experience as Costume Designer/Props Designer.
• Ability to work creatively within budgets and timelines.
• Strong communication and collaboration with cast and crew.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Director to execute the show's vision.
• Coordinate costumes and props for a minimal, flexible show with improv-style character switching.
• Analyze script to understand costume requirements.
• Create drawings to communicate the final look.
• Attend production meetings and rehearsals as required.
• Manage expenditures and keep the budget in check.
• Submit wardrobe receipts to the producer.
• Plan and supervise fittings and dress rehearsals.
• Supervise load-in, setup, tech rehearsals, and dress rehearsals.
• Arrange cleaning, returning, storage, and disposal of costumes and props after the run.

ABOUT THE MUSICAL
Sexy German criminal Alan Rickman-I-mean-Hans-Gruber leads an international gang of terrorists who seize an office tower during a Christmas party. John, a cop from New York, is trapped on the upper floors. He’ll need a Christmas miracle to save his power-dressing wife Holly and the other hostages.

ABOUT GRINDSTONE THEATRE
Grindstone is an improv-based theatre company in Edmonton. The Grindstone wrote and produced Jason Kenney’s Hot Boy Summer The Musical, taking it on tour across Alberta, as well as the disturbingly popular (Thunder)CATS for the 2019 and 2022 Fringe. Other mainstage productions include the award-winning improvised musical The 11 O’clock Number, Urinetown The Musical, The Adventures of Chucky and Reggie, Here Lies Henry, The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged, HONK! The Ugly Duckling Musical, and Shakespeare’s Henry V.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Costume and Props Design:

• Collaborate with the Director to execute the vision for the show
• Coordinate props and costumes that support a minimal, flexible show with improv style character switching
• Examine script in detail in order to understand costume requirements
• Create drawings to communicate the final “look”, as required
• Attend production meetings, as required
• Attend rehearsals, as required
• Execute expenditures and keep budget in check
• Submit all wardrobe related receipts to producer
• Plan and supervise costume fittings and dress rehearsals
• Supervise and assist with load-in and set-up
• Attend technical rehearsals and dress rehearsal, as required
• Supervise and assist with striking the set following the run
• Make arrangements to clean, return, store, and/or dispose of used costumes and props after production run

The Costume/Props Designer will bring to life the vision of Die Harsh: A Christmas Musical

REQUIREMENTS:

• Previous working experience as Costume Designer/Props Designer
• Ability to work creatively within restrictive budgets and timelines
• Ability to task manage efficiently
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Critical-thinker and problem-solver
