Job summary

Lookout Housing + Health Society in Campbell River, BC, is seeking a Casual Shelter Resource Worker to provide intake, supervision and support in a 24/7 emergency shelter for adults facing homelessness, addictions and mental health challenges.

The role requires working day/evening/night shifts, completing records, coordinating with external services, and maintaining safety and boundaries with clients. A valid First Aid certificate and CPI training are assets.

Qualifications

  • Related Certificate; or minimum Grade 12 education, plus two years of recent related experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Familiarity with community resources such as addiction, mental health, income assistance and harm reduction
  • Current Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate
  • Crisis Intervention Skills (CPI), Naloxone and Trauma-Informed Practice training is an asset
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting
  • Strong ability to manage stress and organize workload
  • Excellent communication, writing, documentation, and organizational skills
  • Understands and maintains clientele/worker boundaries
  • Ability to work with disadvantaged adults in a diverse environment
  • Two years sobriety if there were past concerns with alcohol/drug use
  • Criminal Record Clearance – Vulnerable Sector required

Days and Hours of work

7 days a week, day, afternoon/evening and overnight shifts, weekdays, weekends and holidays


Shifts are 7.5 hours in length

Days of rest shall be consecutive

Schedule may change with two weeks’ notice


Probationary/qualifying period will be 488 hours with mid and end point reviews

Salary

$29.62 - 31.40 depending upon applicants' length of seniority (as per the Collective Agreement)


Job Summary

The Shelter Resource Worker (SRW) reports to the Site Manager and works in accordance with the mission and philosophy of Lookout Housing and Health Society, including following Lookout's Code of Ethics. SRWs are direct service staff working within a 24-hour, 7-days-a-week emergency shelter for homeless adults who struggle with a variety of issues such as homelessness, addictions, and mental health. The SRW provides intakes, orientations, and support for guests entering the shelter. The SRW will connect with public service agencies relevant to the needs of the shelter guests.


This position requires successful completion of respirator fit testing, as Lookout is COR (Certificate of Recognition) certified and must comply with WorkSafeBC health and safety requirements. To ensure a proper respirator seal during fit testing and use, employees are required to be clean-shaven where the respirator seals against the face.


Job Duties


  • Provide support, supervision, and assistance to homeless adults who may be facing multiple barriers

  • Job duties are complex and may have a few disagreeable factor

  • Employees are expected to remain alert and attentive during working hours. Sleeping during shifts is not permitted

  • Responsible for complying with and contributing to all aspects of health and safety program

  • Familiarity with community resources; such as addiction, mental health, income assistance and harm reduction
