Job summary

Lookout Housing and Health Society is seeking a Part-Time Peer Support Worker to join the Intensive Case Management Team in Surrey, BC. You will provide peer-based support to clients with substance use, mental health challenges, homelessness, and related issues.

The role emphasizes lived experience, collaboration with staff, and adherence to Lookout's ethics and safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Lived experience similar to ICMT clients and willingness to identify as a peer.
  • Two years of recent experience in mental health, addictions, homelessness and/or social services.
  • Training in Peer Support or Human Services is an asset.
  • Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation and Surrey area.
  • Harm reduction principles and activities knowledge.
  • Ability to work under stress; strong communication and teamwork.
  • Current OFA 1 First Aid required.
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support for individuals registered to the ICMT as per care plans.
  • Offers peer perspective to participants and community groups.
  • Attends community drop-ins to build relationships with participants.
  • Supports psychosocial rehabilitation and harm-reduction services.
  • Welcomes new participants and informs them of Lookout services.
  • Collaborates with staff to maintain a safe, caring environment.
  • Adheres to health and safety policies; no sleeping during shifts.
  • Complies with all health and safety programs.

Days and Hours of work

Thursday through Sunday

Shift times will be 0800 - 1600 Hours

Shifts are 7.5 hours in length

Days of rest shall be consecutive. Schedule may change with two weeks' notice

Probationary/qualifying period will be 488 hours with mid and end point reviews

Salary

$29.62 - 31.40 depending upon applicants' length of seniority (as per the Collective Agreement)

Job Summary

The Peer Support Worker - Intensive Case Management Team, reports to the Health Programs Manager, or designate. The position works in accordance with the mission and philosophy of Lookout Housing and Health Society including following Lookout's Code of Ethics. The Peer Support Worker provides services for individuals with substance use, concurrent disorders and/or mental health issues and complex challenges related to health, homelessness and poverty. The Peer Support Worker has lived experience, similar to ICMT clients being served, and acts as a resource to the team, and assists individuals as identified in the care plan. The Peer Support Worker may interact with the public, other service agencies and professionals involved in the support of the individual.

Respirator Fit Test Requirement

This position requires successful completion of respirator fit testing, as Lookout is COR (Certificate of Recognition) certified and must comply with WorkSafeBC health and safety requirements. To ensure a proper respirator seal during fit testing and use, employees are required to be clean-shaven where the respirator seals against the face.

Job Duties
  • Provides support for those individuals registered to the ICMT, as identified in their individual care plan.
  • Provides a peer perspective of lived experience to the participants of ICMT and community groups.
  • Attends community drop-ins, as a way of developing relationships with potential and current participants of ICMT.
  • Provides support in psychosocial rehabilitation, harm reduction and other related services
  • Welcomes new participants to Lookout, informing of services and making connections by providing peer support.
  • Participates as a team member with other staff to ensure a safe and caring environment by performing duties such as responding to emergencies and supporting others through methods such as sharing knowledge and information.
  • Employees are expected to remain alert and attentive during working hours. Sleeping during shifts is not permitted
  • Responsible for complying with and contributing to all aspects of health and safety program
Qualifications & Competence
  • Lived experience similar to ICMT individuals being served and a willingness to identify as a peer.
  • Two (2) years of recent, related experience working with an emphasis on mental health, addictions, homelessness and/or social services, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Training in Peer Support or Human Services Field, such as a certificate in Substance Use would be consider an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation, with an awareness of current mental health issues and the Surrey area.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles and activities
  • Must work well under stress, which may result from exposure to difficult behaviors
  • Ability to have a kind manner with people, be a good communicator and work well as a team member.
  • Good listening ability, non-judgmental, patient, and non-controlling.
  • Must be creative, quick thinking, with good problem solving abilities.
  • Current OFA 1 First Aid required
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Clearance
