Job Description

Salary Range: $32.59 - $37.26

The Laboratory Assistant will perform pre-analytical functions and blood collections on adults, babies, infants, and children. Responsibilities include collection, preparation, and labeling of specimens, pre-analytical preparation such as centrifuging, aliquoting, labeling, logging, specimen send-out, data entry on Laboratory Information Systems, participation in quality assurance and quality improvement activities, and compliance with departmental procedures and accreditation standards. The role also involves maintaining specimen collection equipment, following inventory control systems, and ensuring health and safety procedures are followed as per hospital guidelines and legal requirements. The Laboratory Assistant will participate in special projects as assigned. Physical demands may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling. This position contributes to maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • MLA/T certification from the MLPAO/CSMLS required
  • Recent laboratory experience in a hospital setting required
  • Experience collecting blood from newborns and children by venipuncture and capillary collection required
  • Experience in Histology/Pathology is an asset
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and quality systems required
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements
  • Experience with pre-analytical functions such as sample sorting, receiving, accessioning, and centrifugation required
  • Ability to work independently within a self-directed team environment
  • Experience with Meditech laboratory module preferred
  • Transportation Dangerous Goods (TDG) certification preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy required
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including days, evenings, and nights
  • Problem-solving skills and reliable attendance are essential
