Job summary

Lookout Housing and Health Society is seeking a part-time Cook in Courtenay, BC. The role involves preparing, cooking, and serving daily meals, maintaining cleanliness, and supervising kitchen volunteers.

The successful candidate will work Saturdays and Sundays, 10:00–18:00, for 7.5 hours per shift, under supervision of the Site Manager. Salary ranges from $27.17 to $28.97 per hour depending on seniority and collective agreement.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or higher with a Cooking Diploma and two years of related experience.
• Current Occupational First Aid Level 1 and FOODSAFE certificate.
• Experience with institutions or large organizations and cost analysis.
• Experience in menu planning and creating supply lists.
• Crisis Intervention Training is an asset.
• Ability to work independently or in a team and manage daily workload.
• Strong written and verbal communication.
• Ability to work with disadvantaged adults in diverse environments.

Shift times will be 1000 - 1800 Hours

Shifts are 7.5 hours in length

Days of rest shall be consecutive. Schedule may change with two weeks’ notice

Probationary/qualifying period will be 488 hours with mid and end point reviews

Salary

$27.17 - 28.97 depending upon applicants' length of seniority (as per the Collective Agreement)

Job Summary

The Cook reports to the Site Manager and works in accordance with the mission and philosophy of Lookout Housing and Health Society including following Lookout’s Code of Ethics. The Cook prepares, cooks, and serves daily meals and is responsible for ensuring availability of food and beverages for guests. Maintains a high standard of cleanliness in eating and prep areas.

This position requires successful completion of respirator fit testing, as Lookout is COR (Certificate of Recognition) certified and must comply with WorkSafeBC health and safety requirements. To ensure a proper respirator seal during fit testing and use, employees are required to be clean-shaven where the respirator seals against the face.

Job Duties

• Prepare, cook, and serve daily meals, snacks and beverages
• Ensure availability of food for guests after hours
• Maintain high standard of cleanliness throughout kitchen, dining, storage areas and equipment
• Work with and oversee kitchen volunteers
• Follow set menu and itemize supplies required
• Will organize and complete required work in a safe, clean and friendly environment
• Some shopping may occur
• Responsible for complying with and contributing to all aspects of health and safety program
• Employees are expected to remain alert and attentive during working hours. Sleeping during shifts is not permitted.

Qualifications & Competence

• Minimum Grade 12 education and Cooking Diploma plus two (2) years of recent related experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• Must have current Occupational First Aid Level 1 and FOODSAFE Certificate from the Department of Health
• Experience with institutions or large organizations including experience with cost analysis and effectiveness
• Experience in menu planning and developing order supply lists
• Crisis Intervention Skills Training is an asset
• Ability to work independently or in a team setting and to manage and organize daily workload
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
• Must understand and maintain clientele/worker boundaries
• Ability to work with disadvantaged and challenging adults in a diverse environment
• Quick learner and self-motivated
• Strong physical and mental ability to perform work tasks
• Must be able to operate job related equipment
• A minimum two (2) years of sobriety if you have had concerns related to alcohol and/or drug use
