Summary Of Duties
Reports to District Supervisor in Transportation Operations & Maintenance, Roadway Maintenance Section. Performs maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs on City vehicles and small tools/equipment related to the Roadway Maintenance yard. Works in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and all City of Hamilton policies. Performs duties related to the major responsibilities of the District Yard Attendant.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Pick up and deliver trucks and small equipment for repairs. Receives, stocks materials, and maintains accurate inventory records.
- Update and audit inventory of all materials, tools, and equipment. Maintain electronic logs and report discrepancies.
- Conduct inventory checks, assist with yard inventory counts, and investigate discrepancies.
- Perform inspections, repairs, and maintenance on tools, equipment, and fleet vehicles. Ensure logs and reports are completed accurately.
- Operate and maintain hand and power tools, ensuring proper use and safety. Report any deficiencies or damages.
- Request maintenance or repairs for equipment with proper approvals. Assist with preventative maintenance checks.
- Provide feedback on tools/equipment performance and quality. Communicate inventory needs to Supervisor.
- Assist with disposing of old/damaged equipment with proper documentation.
- Operate heavy machinery such as front end loader, backhoe, and dump trucks as directed. Wear all required PPE.
- Perform operator duties and manual labor, including climbing, lifting, and handling materials.
- Interact courteously with the public, colleagues, and stakeholders. Respond professionally to inquiries.
- Prioritize tasks and work independently or in a team. Communicate delays or issues to Supervisors.
- Complete logs, reports, and other documentation accurately. Follow health and safety policies.
- Perform other duties related to the role as assigned.
Qualifications
- Technical knowledge of machinery, tools, and vehicle maintenance. Experience with specific equipment like street sweepers, plows, and related parts.
- Experience operating heavy machinery such as front end loaders, dump trucks, and backhoes. Certification is an asset.
- Experience with hand tools, diagnostics, and minor repairs. Mechanical knowledge required.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate records and logs.
- Ability to work with materials like asphalt, concrete, and fuel. Capable of lifting at least 23 kg, occasionally up to 45 kg.
- Proficiency in basic arithmetic, reading diagrams, and using software like Word and Excel.
- Organizational skills and ability to work in fast-paced environments.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation such as Occupational Health and Safety Act, W.H.M.I.S, and traffic regulations.
- Strong interpersonal skills for working with the public and team members.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, including beyond standard hours when required.
- Oxy-acetylene torch training is an asset.
