Job summary

The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory is seeking a casual Janitor to maintain the cleanliness of our Vancouver facility. You will perform general cleaning tasks across floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, garbage disposal, and related duties to support a safe, welcoming environment.

The role requires a High School diploma with up to six months of specialized courses, plus a Building Service Worker Certificate or Diploma, WHMIS, First Aid and a Criminal Record Check.

Qualifications

• High school completion with up to six months of specialized courses.
• Building Service Worker Certificate or Diploma; WHMIS; First Aid; Criminal Record Check.
• Three months of related cleaning experience, including familiarity with cleaning supplies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Maintains the cleanliness of the facility, floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, collects and disposes of garbage, vacuums.
• Checks, cleans, moves, arranges and dusts furniture as required.
• Ensures external property upkeep like cleaning outside windows and sweeping sidewalks.
• Checks doors and windows to ensure building security.
• Reports safety concerns and repair issues.
• Restocks washroom supplies.
• Spot washes walls, strips and waxes floors and shampoos carpet.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB PURPOSE

The Janitor maintains the cleanliness of the facility, property and or grounds in compliance with applicable standards.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES

• Ensures the general upkeep of the facility such as cleaning floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, collects and disposes of garbage, vacuums
• Checks, cleans, moves, arranges and dusts furniture as required
• Ensures the general upkeep of external property such as, cleaning main floor outside windows, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks
• Checks doors and windows to ensure building security
• Reports safety concerns and repair issues (e.g. furniture and fixtures)
• Restocks washroom supplies
• Spot washes accessible walls, strips and waxes floors and shampoos carpet
• Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED

The successful job applicant will have completed High School, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months.

SPECIAL LICENSES, DIPLOMAS, CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS

• Building Service Worker Certificate or Diploma
• WHIMS
• First Aid
• Criminal Record Check

MINIMUM PRIOR RELATED EXPERIENCE

Three months of prior related experience, including previous cleaning experience and familiarity with cleaning supplies and procedures.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED

The performance of the job requires frequently operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, etc

CONCENTRATION REQUIRED

The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when using motorized equipment, handling hazardous chemicals, and using non-motorized equipment and general cleaning.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the entire facility and surrounding property designated.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

• Handling garbage
• Isolation and monotony
• Odours
• Dealing with angry people
• Verbal abuse
• Exposure to toxic chemicals
• Various weather conditions
• Washrooms (i.e. human waste)
• The incumbent may have little to no travel required.

• Exposure to toxic chemicals (e.g. toxic spills)
• Moving objects
• Electrical hazards
• Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. back, wrist)

• Use fume masks where appropriate

HOURS OF WORK

This is a casual position.

COMPENSATION

The target hiring range for this position is $24.05 to $24.43 with a maximum of $24.80. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
