Job description

Black & McDonald’s Vancouver team is growing! The IT Systems Engineer position is located at the Teck Acute Care Centre site in Vancouver and reports to the Facility Manager.

The IT Systems Engineer’s role is to provide technical support in the configuration, enhancement, monitoring, maintenance, optimization, and support of all aspects of IT and low voltage electrical systems within the Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC). The IT Systems Engineer will also participate in project work, providing technical skills and subject matter expertise. They will collaborate with technical specialists, project managers, external vendors, and IT service providers to ensure successful outcomes.

The IT Systems Engineer will handle daily systems operations and support project activities by applying personal initiative, knowledge, technical skills, and expertise related to the TACC’s low voltage building systems, including IT hardware and software assets such as servers, storage devices, networks, telecommunications, security, administration, and monitoring platforms.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Configure, monitor, maintain, repair, optimize, and support the IT and electrical systems at the TACC to ensure ongoing operations.
  • Provide after-hours support, remotely or onsite, as needed.
  • Create, review, escalate, and update service tickets with customers and vendors.
  • Investigate and diagnose issues related to IT and electrical systems, supporting first-line to urgent escalations.
  • Coordinate with teams to resolve critical life safety system issues involving IT/life safety systems.
  • Monitor system performance and generate reports.
  • Manage IT assets, including inventory and documentation.
  • Recommend and perform system upgrades, repairs, and improvements.
  • Maintain change management processes for system updates.
  • Review processes, identify system deficiencies, and implement improvements.
  • Collaborate with team members, vendors, and project managers to execute support and project tasks.
  • Test and troubleshoot system components and devices.
  • Test and repair life safety systems.
  • Update documentation related to IT services.
  • Manage inventory of IT and electronic supplies.
  • Complete maintenance records and work orders.
  • Supervise IT and electronic work performed by contractors and train staff in troubleshooting.
  • Evaluate infrastructure and equipment to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Review plans and specifications for minor projects, providing cost estimates and liaising with stakeholders.
  • Assist with emergency codes and maintain safety protocols.
  • Maintain, evaluate, and revise system documentation and maintenance schedules.
  • Conduct regular inspections and prioritize work orders.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including non-IT tasks and assisting other trades.

Education Requirements:

  • Preferred certifications: Computer Degree, ITIL, A++, MCSE, Network+, CCNA or higher, VMware or Microsoft server certifications
  • College diploma in Systems Engineering, Computing Science, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum three years supporting a North American organization
  • Knowledge of networking, virtual environments, and ongoing technological updates

Work Experience Requirements:

This is a union position, with a starting pay range of $49.25 - $56.22/hour depending on qualifications. Due to vaccination requirements at hospital facilities, the successful candidate must be fully vaccinated prior to hiring.
